ATLANTA, Ga. – The ULM soccer program dropped a 2-0 decision to Sun Belt Conference newcomer Georgia State on Sunday at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Sophomore
Mariah Mitchell led the Warhawks (5-7-1, 0-2 SBC) offensively with four shots, all of which were on goal. Freshman
Jenna Pillon took two shots, while freshmen Nancy Kirk and
Jenna Floyd each fired one.
“Georgia State was able to finish on its chances and we did not, that was the difference in the game,” said ULM head coach
Roberto Mazza. “We started a little slower than expected in the first half but came out strong in the second. We have a young team with a lot of talent. The weekend was a great experience for us and we will keep working to get better.”
ULM had several opportunities to score and held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
In the back, the defensive line of freshmen
Cameron Stoker,
Whitney Tuckfield and Allie Dickson played all 90 minutes and ceased several good opportunities by the Panthers. Freshman goalkeeper
Holly Mallinson stood her ground in net, making 10 saves.
GSU (3-6-1, 1-1 SBC) got on the board in a 33rd minute on a goal by Ashley Nagy when she was not waved offsides after a through ball. She got behind the Warhawks back line and finished over the keeper's head. The Panthers added on with a penalty shot goal by Alyssia Feronti after 74 minutes.
ULM started eight freshmen in the contest and has started at least that many in every game this season. 14 newcomers gained experience in the game.
The Warhawks will look to bounce back when they play their conference home opener on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1:00 p.m. against UL-Lafayette at the ULM Soccer Complex.
