Warhawks Race Past Bobcats in Conference Tilt

MONROE, La. – For the second consecutive game the ULM women's basketball led wire-to-wire as it defeated Texas State, 78-52, Saturday afternoon inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Texas State (5-10, 2-2) opened the second half on a quick 4-0 spurt to trim the deficit to 12 points at 34-22 with 18:56 to play and that forced head coach Mona Martin to call a timeout.

ULM (6-9, 2-1) responded with a 16-6 run to take a 50-28 lead with 11:44 to play. Jasmine Shaw and Elexar Tugler highlighted the Warhawk run that led to a 22-point lead.

The Warhawks were able to push their lead to 26 points late in the game and that was the margin of victory for the Warhawks.

ULM fell just two points shy of surpassing the 80-point plateau for the sixth time this season.

Four different Warhawks reached double-figures and the quartet was highlighted by Jasmine Shaw's 14 points. Shaw also grabbed eight rebounds in the game as ULM outrebounded Texas State, 52-47.

Ashely Ezeh led Texas State with 15 points.

ULM outscored Texas State 34-32 in the paint and 24-13 in points off of turnovers. The Warhawks also had 21 second chance points and its bench scored 30 points. Texas State, meanwhile, has 17 second chance points and 22 points from its bench.

ULM opened the game on a 9-0 spurt and they held Texas State scoreless for the first 5:44 of Saturday's contest. Alexar Tugler and Ashleigh Simmons combined to score the first nine points for the Warhawks.

Kileah Mays got the Bobcats on the scoreboard with a layup with 14:16 to play in the opening half.

Following Mays' basket, the Warhawks were able to push the lead back to nine on a Sharnice Brooks layup with 13:16 to play. For the majority of the final 13 minutes of the half, ULM led by double digits (largest lead: 17).

ULM shot 38.2% in the first half, compared to 11.8% for Texas State. At the charity stripe, the Warhawks were 6-for-9 (66.7%), while the Bobcats were 10-of-12. The Bobcats' 18 first-half points were tied for the second-lowest total in a half this season (18, at Rice, Dec. 5).
