Post-Game Quotes vs. Texas State, Oct. 25, 2014
ULM Head Coach Todd Berry
Opening statement…
“Obviously stats don't mean anything. Congratulations to Texas State. I have a great amount of respect for Dennis Franchione, his program and what he has done. I thought his kids played extremely hard and stayed in there. Early in the game if we could have scored some touchdowns instead of kicking field goals, we could have put that game out of reach. We didn't, and that's something we need to get better at. Second half defensively, we couldn't tackle anybody. We were in a position to make the play, and we didn't. They made plays, and we didn't. Offensively, we couldn't consistently run the football, which didn't help us in relation to play-action passes. We need to better up front on the offensive line and tackle better on defensive. I don't want to hear anything about the defense getting tired. They could have gotten themselves off the field, and they didn't. They only had 25 plays in the first half. It just comes down to us being focus, and we got to stop pressing in the second half. Everybody is trying to make plays instead of just doing their job. We are going to come back tomorrow. We are going to look at the same things that we have seen the last two weeks where guys are not doing their jobs. We are pressing too hard and not taking care of my business.”
On defense pressing in the second half…
“They were all going for a turnover, and we didn't get one. They were more worried about the streak and not winning the football game.”
On second half struggles…
“We weren't able to make plays. In the second half, they made plays, and we didn't. They made blocks, and we didn't. They made tackles, and we couldn't tackle anybody. This has been a reoccurring thing the last three weeks in the second half. Whether it be our conditioning or over conditioning, in the second half we are pressing, and we are not focused. We aren't making the same plays in the second half. I thought we came out in the second half with a very good mentality. As the game progress, they scored, and we went into full-time panic mode not believing they could score. Instead of responding, we are reacting.”
Texas State Head Coach Dennis Franchione
Opening Statement...
“We did well on both sides of the ball tonight. The offense really got going and coach [Mike] Schultz called some good plays. The whole staff did well and the kids really executed. We hurt ourselves with penalties again but we overcame them.”
On David Mayo...
“If the opposing team stays between the white lines then David is going to get them sooner or later. He's certainly a great player. Our whole defense stepped up, especially on ULM's fourth down play at the end, what a play that was.”
On the first SBC road win...
“I'm just really proud of our kids. This was a great road conference win, we've never done that before. We are just road warriors this year.”
On Texas State's final touchdown...
“ULM plays so much man-to-man coverage and we were trying to just rub off the defensive backs. We were trying to get Terrance Franks free and his speed made it happen from there. There was also a great block from Brice Gunter and a nice job from the offensive job on picking up the pressure. Tyler Jones bounced back tonight and made some plays.”
