MONROE, La. -- Fueled by a big second half and three players reaching double figures, the ULM women's basketball team earned the season sweep with a 70-65 win over UT Arlington Wednesday night inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
UT Arlington (3-19, 2-9) raced out to an 11-point lead as the visitors used a 13-5 run in the opening minutes of the second half.
The Warhawks (9-14, 5-6) battled back and took the lead on a jumper by Ashleigh Simmons. Simmons capped a 18-6 run that gave the Warhawks a 47-46 lead with 10:18 to play in the contest.
ULM and UT Arlington battled back and forth down the stretch, but the Warhawks were able to claim the victory Wednesday night as they hit 10 of their final 12 free throws en route to the five-point win.
Simmons led the Warhawks with 16 points, while Elexar Tugler and Jasmine Shaw each added 12.
Desherra Nwanguma led UTA Arlington with 28 points in 31 minutes of action.
ULM opened the first half on a quick 4-0 spurt as the Warhawks took the early four-point lead just 48 seconds into the contest. Simmons and Christina Gray scored the early buckets for the Warhawks.
UT Arlington responded with a 7-0 run of its own to take a 7-4 lead with 17:09 to play in the opening half.
ULM closed the deficit to one (7-6) on a layup by Gray. The Warhawks would then go cold from the floor as they suffered a drought of 6:31 that aided the Mavericks en route to a 13-6 advantage.
UT Arlington suffered a drought of more than seven minutes midway through the first half. The Maverick drought of 7:36 allowed ULM to take a 14-13 lead before UT Arlington ended the drought on a Desherra Nwanguma layup that gave the Mavericks a 15-14 lead.
The two teams continued to battle back and forth down the stretch, but the Mavericks were able to take a three-point lead (27-24) into the locker room at the half.
ULM will return to action Saturday as it hosts UALR inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for noon.
