MONROE, La. -- The top three of the Warhawk order combined for six hits and one run, but it was not enough as ULM fell to visiting Southern Miss, 14-2, Tuesday evening at Warhawk Field.
Southern Miss (2-2) struck first in the top of the third inning as they tallied eight runs on six hits and one error in the frame. The big Golden Eagle inning was capped by a two-out, two-RBI double by Joey Harris.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead an inning later as they added five runs. Four different players recorded a RBI in the inning and Nick Dawson led the way with two RBI on a single to center field.
ULM (2-2) got on the scoreboard in the home half of the fourth as Justin Stawychny belted a solo homer down the left field line. The blast by Stawychny was the first of the season and the 10th of his career.
Dalton Herrington was able to score an inning later. The senior ledoff the fifth with a single through the right side and moved to second on a single by Jeff Fuller. Herrington moved to third on a fly out and was able to score on a wild pitch by Southern Miss starter, A.J. Glasshof.
Southern Miss added a single run in the top of the seventh to set the final tally at 14-2.
ULM starter Josh Leone (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work. Leone struck out three and walked one during his first collegiate start.
Herrington, Jeff Fuller and Keelin Rasch combined for six hits and Herrington scored one run.
A.J. Glasshof (1-0) earned the win after allowing just two runs on five hits in five innings. Glasshof walked four and struck out seven batters.
Matt Durst, Dylan Burdeaux, Connor Barron and Nick Dawson combined for eight hits, eight RBI and seven runs.
ULM will make its first road trip of the season as it travels to Thibodaux, La., for a four-game weekend at the Carmel Inn Showdown. The Warhawks will face Western Illinois (twice), Nicholls State and Southern Illinois during the trek to the southern part of the state.
