ULM Caps Inaugural Warhawk Classic with Pair of Shutout Wins

Softball

MONROE, La. -- The Warhawks (12-4) needed only five innings to beat both Alcorn State and Southern in a pair of shutouts Sunday afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex.

With the victories, the ULM softball program took home the tournament plaque by going 5-1 over the weekend.

In game one, Miyuki Navarrete tallied three RBI while Faith Bohack notched a 3-for-3 outing.  Bohack highlighted the late game with three RBI.

GAME ONE -- ULM 9, Alcorn State 0 (5 inn.)

Faith Bohack's 3-for-3 outing combined with Miyuki Navarrete's three RBI helped lift ULM to a 9-0 victory over Alcorn State Sunday afternoon.

The Warhawks got on the board first in the bottom of the second, plating five runs in all.  Rochelle Roberts drew a walk and worked her way to third on two steals.  Roberts later scored the game's first run on an errant throw to third.

Navarrete then vaulted a two-run double down the left field line to score two runs.  The second baseman was driven in by the very next hitter in the frame, Courtney Dutreix, who found the gap with an RBI single. Hollie Letourneau's RBI fielder's choice capped the scoring.

ULM strung together RBI singles from Molly Mackey and Sidney Coy to climb to a 7-0 advantage.  Navarrete then added an RBI sacrifice fly to give the squad an 8-0 lead.

Bohack later scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth after stealing two bases.

Samantha Hamby went the distance and struck out four in the shutout.  She improved to 7-1 on the year.

GAME TWO -- ULM 8, Southern 0 (5 inn.)

The Warhawks triumphed over the Southern Lady Jaguars 8-0 to conclude the inaugural Warhawk Classic Sunday.

Faith Bohack's two-run double in the bottom of the first got the scoring started for the Warhawks.

Molly Mackey added an RBI single in the bottom of the third to make it 4-0 ULM.  The knock scored Amye Barre, who slapped a one-out double to left earlier in the inning.

Bohack collected her third RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth.  One batter later, Barre added an RBI double into left center to make it 6-0 Warhawks.

Pinch-hitter McKinley Marks and third baseman Vanessa Garcia vaulted back-to-back homers in the bottom of the fifth to give ULM the 8-0 win.

Jessica Colliver pitched four innings and struck out two. She was credited with the win, though she and reliever Haylie Wilson combined for the shutout.

ULM returns to action Feb. 28 when it takes on Texas Southern and Texas at 10 AM and 4 PM, respectively, to start the Texas Tournament in Austin.
