MONROE, La. -- Andro Cutura tossed a complete game for Southeastern Louisiana as the visiting Lions claimed a 13-4 win over ULM Friday night at Warhawk Field.
Friday's meeting was the first between ULM (4-6) and Southeastern (7-2) since the 2006 season and the Warhawks now lead the all-time series, 65-53-1.
Southeastern jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as they plated a trio of runs in the top of the first inning. Andrew Godbold drove in the game's first run as his sacrifice fly to right field allowed Jacob Williams to cross home plate. Brett Hoffman capped the inning with a two-out, two-RBI double to left field.
The Warhawks responded with a three-spot of their own in the home half of the first. With two outs in the inning, Keelin Rasch and Justin Stawychny recorded back-to-back singles to get things started for ULM. Kodie Tidwell followed with a RBI double down the right field line as Rasch scored to close the gap to two runs (3-1). Chet Simoneaux followed with a single to short stop and thanks to a throwing error he was able to move to second base. Simoneaux tallied one RBI as Stawychny scored from third; Tidwell was able to score thanks to the error and the sophomore's run evened the game at 3-3.
Southeastern regained the lead as it again scored three runs, this time in the top of the second inning. Three different Lions drove in a run in the inning to give the visitors a 6-3 lead.
The Lions were able to increase their lead to 8-3 as they scored a single run in the third and fifth innings.
After three straight scoreless innings, the Warhawks were able to break through in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Dalton Herrington singled up the middle and he was able to move to third after a stolen base and a wild pitch. With two outs in the inning, Jeff Fuller struck out swinging but was able to reach first thanks to a throwing error by Lion catcher Jameson Fisher. Fisher's error allowed Herrington to score to trim the deficit to four (8-4).
Southeastern scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning and and three in the top of the ninth to set the final tally at 13-4.
Rasch and Simoneaux led the Warhawks at the plate as they combined for four hits. Rasch scored one run and Simoneaux drove in one.
The loss was credited to starter Alex Dumaine and he falls to 1-2 on the season. Dumaine allowed six runs on three hits with four walks and one punchout in 1.1 innings.
Cutura (2-0) allowed three earned runs (four total) on seven hits and one walk with 10 punchouts.
