Warhawks Swept by Texas State in Opening Sun Belt Doubleheader

Softball

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The ULM softball program was swept by Texas State in the first Sun Belt series of the season for either side.

In game one, the Warhawks' monumental comeback effort fell just short as the Bobcats took the opener 14-11.  Texas State led 9-0 after the first inning, but ULM (14-10, 0-2 Sun Belt) outscored the hosts 11-5 over the next six innings.

In game two, the Bobcats (17-10, 2-0 Sun Belt) used two home runs by Kelli Baker en route to an 8-0 defeat of the Warhawks.

GAME ONE -- Texas State 14, ULM 11

Despite allowing nine runs in the first inning, the Warhawks were able to claw back at Texas State's huge lead by outscoring the Bobcats 11-5 over the next six innings, however it wasn't enough as ULM fell 14-11 in Saturday's opener.

ULM's scoring started in the top of the third when Faith Bohack's RBI single to score Alexis Cacioppo from third put ULM on the board with nobody out.  Late in the inning, Molly Mackey greeted Bobcat reliever Kaylee Garner with a 2-out, 3-run blast to make in 9-4 Texas State.  One batter later, Mackenzie Miller hit a solo shot to cut the deficit to four.

In the home half of the inning, Courtney Harris capped a 3-run frame to put the Bobcats back up 12-5.

The Warhawks got a run back in the top of the fifth when pinch-runner Sidney Coy scored on a wild pitch.  Heads-up base running by Miyuki Navarrete (who singled) gave ULM a runner on third.  It paid off as Courtney Dutreix singled to drive in Navarrete and bring the Warhawks back within four at 12-8.

Texas State plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.  The tallies proved to be the difference in the contest as ULM answered with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Navarrete, Cacioop and Dutreix each had an RBI in the ULM seventh.

Mackey and Rochelle Roberts both tallied their first career homers in the contest.

GAME TWO - Texas State 8, ULM 0 (5 inn.)

Kelli Baker's two home runs accounting for four total RBI were all Texas State needed to down ULM 8-0 in five innings in Saturday's night cap.

The Warhawks were able to string together three hits in the top of the fourth but were unable to score.

The Bobcats' Courtney Harris delivered an RBI single to lift her squad to the 8-0 advantage in the home half of the fourth.

Samantha Hamby once again suffered the loss while Rayn House was credited with the win.

ULM returns to action tomorrow at noon to conclude the series with Texas State.
