Hamby No-Hits South Alabama in Opener, but No. 12 Jags Sweep Saturday Twin Bill

Softball

MOBILE, Ala. -- The ULM softball program suffered a pair of setbacks Saturday, falling 2-0 and 7-0 to No. 12 South Alabama.

The day began with a beautifully pitched game from both Samantha Hamby and USA's Hannah Campbell.  Hamby no-hit the Jaguars but fell short.

In the nightcap, South Alabama's offense exploded for a 7-1 win over the Warhawks (15-12, 1-4 Sun Belt).

GAME ONE -- No. 12 South Alabama 2, ULM 0

Samantha Hamby's first career no-hitter was not enough to lift ULM over South Alabama (28-3, 6-0) in Saturday's opener.  The 12th-ranked Jaguars plated two runs without the benefit of a hit to edge the Warhawks.

Faith Bohack went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to pace the Warhawks at the plate.

Hamby worked around a two on, no out situation in the bottom of the second.  After allowing the first two batters of the inning to reach via a hit by pitch and a walk, Hamby sent the rest of the Jaguars down in order to keep the game scoreless.

South Alabama drew first blood, scoring their first run of the contest without the benefit of a hit. Kaitlyn Griffith was hit by the pitch then stole two bases in the course of Chloe Rathburn's at-bat.  Rathburn later drove in her teammate on a sacrifice fly to left.

The Jaguars added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI ground out by Stephanie Pilkington.  Emily Messer, who walked earlier in the frame, scored from second on a heads up base running play.

The Warhawks were able to get a runner to third in the top of the sixth with two down, but could not score despite scattering five hits in the contest.

The game marked ULM's first no-hitter since Stephanie Routzon no-hit Grambling State on Apr. 19, 2011.  It was also the first time South Alabama had been no-hit since 2012.

Courtney Dutreix made several outstanding catches in left field, contending with a prevailing wind to help preserve Hamby's no-hitter.

Jags' starter Hannah Campbell was credited with the win, scattering five hits and five strikeouts in the complete game effort.

GAME TWO - South Alabama 7, ULM 1

The Jaguar bats exploded for seven runs on 11 hits in Saturday's night cap as the Warhawks suffered a 7-1 loss.

South Alabama struck first on Kaitlyn Griffith's RBI double in the bottom of the opening inning.  ULM starter Jessica Colliver avoided further damage, however, stranding a runner at third.

Griffith drove in two more runs in the bottom of the third, also on a double with two outs.  Griffith later scored on a ULM error to give South Alabama a 4-0 advantage.

The Jaguars would add one more run in that third inning and scratched single runs in both the fourth and fifth frames.

ULM got on the board when Faith Bohack scored on pinch-hitter Sidney Coy's RBI single in the top of the 7th.

Jessica Colliver suffered the loss while Farish Beard was credited with the win.

The Warhawks conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
