MONROE, La. -- ULM softball walked-off as 4-3 winners Sunday against Western Kentucky to cap its seven-game home stand. Alexis Cacioppo blasted a three-run homer to straightaway left field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Warhawks (18-16, 4-7 SBC) to the victory.
Samantha Hamby was credited with the win, going all seven innings and allowing three runs on three Lady Topper (28-14-1, 8-4) hits. It was her 12th victory of the season.
ULM got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third after Miyuki Navarrete walked, stole second and scored on a two-base throwing error by the Lady Topper catcher.
The contest remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth, when WKU would plate three runs. Amanda Thomas and Andie Martin slapped back-to-back RBI singles with two down in the inning to tie and take a 2-1 lead. The third WKU run came on a bases-loaded walk.
The Warhawks got a base hit in the bottom of the sixth but did not score.
The ULM seventh began with pinch-hitter McKinley Marks was hit by a 2-0 pitch. Then, Hollie Letourneau doubles to left center to put two in scoring position for the Warhawks. The next two batters struck out and grounded out, respectively, setting the stage for Cacioppo's home run.
It was the third time this season the Warhawks won in walk-off fashion during conference play.
ULM held its annual Pink Day for Breast Cancer Awareness as part of the Save Second Base campaign.
The softball team returns to action April 15 at Central Arkansas, beginning an eight-game road trip.
