Hot-Hitting Warhawks Split Twin Bill at Lamar

Softball

BEAUMONT, Texas -- The ULM softball program combined for 14 runs on 20 hits in its split of a non-conference doubleheader at Lamar Wednesday evening.

Courtney Dutreix and Vanessa Garcia led the Warhawks by going 5-for-7 across the two contests.  Alexis Cacioppo had four RBI to pace the offense.

Miyuki Navarrete stole a base in each game and reached 82 career steals and 37 on the season.

ULM (21-20) dropped the opener by an 8-5 tally but regrouped to take the finale 9-5.

The Warhawks finish their non-conference schedule with a 16-11 mark.

GAME ONE - Lamar 8, ULM 5

The Lady Cardinals (20-22) plated three runs on two sacrifice flies and an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to surpass the Warhawks 8-5 in a back-and-forth contest to open play Wednesday at Ford Park.

Lamar got on the board first, getting a two-run home run from Casey Cromwell in the bottom of the first.

The Warhawks were able to work out of a jam in the bottom of the second, recording two key outs with runners at the corners for Lamar.

ULM was able to take advantage of a Lamar error in the top of the third, plating two runs. Rochelle Roberts and Alexis Cacioppo hit back-to-back singles to even the contest.

The Lady Cardinals got out to a 3-2 lead on Holland's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, but the Warhawks answered the run in the top of the fifth.

The contest remained tied at 3-3 until Lamar plated two runs on back-to-back walks with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth.

ULM would tie the ballgame for a third time, however, plating two runs in the top of the sixth on Courtney Dutreix's two-run single with two down.

Jessica Colliver was saddled with the loss.

GAME TWO -- ULM 9, Lamar 5

A four-run first inning was all ULM needed en route to a 9-5 triumph in Wednesday's nightcap.

Faith Bohack's two-run single with the bases loaded got the Warhawks on the board initially. Garcia and Dutreix later followed with run-scoring singles.

Lamar got within a run by scoring three in the bottom of the second. All of the runs came courtesy of the long ball.  Beverly Corry got the Lady Cardinals on the board with a solo blast then Holland capped the scoring with a two-run blast.

The Warhawks got all three runs back in the third inning.  Rochelle Roberts drove in the first run on an RBI ground out.  Cacioppo delivered the big blow with a two-run double to put ULM up 6-3.

Garcia tallied an RBI double in the sixth to cap ULM's scoring.

Melanie Coyne (4-1) got the win in relief of starter Samantha Hamby. Coyne went five innings and struck out two while surrendering just two runs on three hits.

Coyne pitched three and a third innings of no-hit ball before Lauren Gambone blasted a solo homer to bring Lamar within five.  The Lady Cardinals added another run on an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh, but Coyne was able to avoid further damage.

The Warhawks return to action Saturday, Apr. 26 with a doubleheader against Georgia State. First pitch is at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
