LAFAYETTE, La. -- ULM scored nine runs in a four-inning span, but it was not enough as No. 3 UL-Lafayette rallied for a 12-9 win Thursday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
After a scoreless first, the Warhawks (22-32, 11-17) jumped on the scoreboard first with a bair of runs in the top of the second inning. Dalton Herrington was able to score the game's first run on a sac fly by Ross Moore. Justin Stawychny delivered a ground-rule double that bounced out of play down the left field line and allowed Chet Simoneaux to score.
The Cajuns (47-7, 24-4) took the lead in the home half of the second with a trio of runs. Seth Harrison tied the game with a two-RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch to put UL-L ahead, 3-2.
The Warhawks quickly regained the lead with a four-run, third inning. Herrington gave ULM a 4-3 lead as he smacked his ninth homer of the year and Jacob Stockton later pushed the Warhawk lead to three (6-3) with a two-RBI single to center.
The two teams traded two-spots over the next three half-innings before ULM tacked on a single run in the fifth to own a 9-7 advantage. The Cajuns took its first lead since the second inning as they plated a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 10-9 lead.
UL-L added a single run in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to set the final tally at 12-9. Matt Hicks (6-1) earned the win in relief after allowing one unearned run in 2.2 innings, while Ryan Wilson earned his seventh save after three scoreless frames.
Alex Dumaine (3-5) was tagged with the loss after he allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout in two innings of work.
ULM and UL-L will return to the diamond tomorrow evening as the second game of the series is set to begin at 6 p.m.

· Dalton Herrington recorded his 23rd stolen base of the season in Thursday's contest… He is now tied for 10th in single-season history (23, Cris Coffield, 1996).
