MONROE, La. -- ULM took a 3-2 lead after seven innings, but WKU tied the game in the eighth and scored the game-winning run in the 11th to earn the one-run win on Friday night at Warhawk Field.
After four scoreless innings, WKU broke through first and plated a single run in the top of the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Hilltoppers scored for the second straight inning as they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth.
ULM was able to score its first run in the bottom of the sixth as Keelin Rasch drove in Josh Faciane to close the deficit to one run.
The Warhawks were able to take the lead with a pair of back-to-back hits in the bottom of the seventh. Chet Simoneaux drove in Dalton Herrington with a double down the left field line and Josh Faciane followed with a single through the right side that allowed Simoneaux to score and give ULM a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the eighth, WKU was able to even the game at 3-3 on a RBI single by Regan Flaherty. After scoreless frames in the ninth and 10th innings, the Hilltoppers scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly en route to the 4-3 win.
The Warhawks and Hilltoppers will face off in game two of the weekend series tomorrow night at 6 p.m. Prior to first pitch, former pitcher Tom Brown (1968-71) will have his No. 8 jersey retired.
