LAFAYETTE, La. – The sixth-seeded ULM softball program capped off its huge day with a 2-1, nine inning victory over third-seeded Georgia State at the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Wednesday at Lamson Park.
Hollie Letourneau came through with the game-winning hit in the ninth inning to put ULM (24-25) up for good. The frame started with a walk by Amye Barre. After Kaitlyn Dupuis came in to pitch-run, she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Faith Bohack. Letourneau entered the game as a pitch-hitter and poked a ball through the middle to score Dupuis.
Samantha Hamby (16-15) picked up the win after throwing 4.1 shutout innings of relief. Melanie Coyne started the game and did not allow an earned run in 4.2 innings. Kaitlyn Medlam (20-12) took the loss for GSU (30-26) after allowing two runs in 9.0 frames.
SBC Freshman of the Year Rochelle Roberts put the Warhawks ahead, 1-0, in the top of the third with an RBI single to centerfield. The hit scored Courtney Dutreix from second base after she reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Sidney Coy was hit by a pitch to begin the frame.
The Panthers levelled the score, 1-1, in the fifth inning. They had runners on first and second with two outs when a defensive miscue allowed a run across.
ULM out-hit GSU 6-5 in the contest. The Warhawks also garnered hits in the game from Robbie Dailey, Alexis Cacioppo and Bohack.
Earlier in the day, ULM defeated seventh-seeded Troy on a walk-off after trailing by a run in the final frame. Roberts recorded a pair of hits in both contests.
The Warhawks will take the field again at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday when they face second-seeded South Alabama in the first game of a four-team, double-elimination bracket.
