MONROE, La. – Sophomore Jenna Pillon scored a pair of goals and junior Mariah Mitchell added one late as the ULM soccer program broke a halftime tie to defeat Mississippi Valley State 3-1 on Friday at the ULM Soccer Complex.
“We started slow but picked it up in the second half,” said ULM head coach Roberto Mazza. “We definitely controlled the game and tempo which created a lot of chances to score. We know we need to be better going into Sunday's game.”
Pillon got the Warhawks (5-3-1) started in the 23rd minute in the middle of the box after a cross from sophomore Whitney Tuckfield. Pillon fired for the upper left corner to put ULM ahead, 1-0.
The Delta Devilettes (0-7) answered in the 35th minute to knot it up, 1-1 on a goal by Nykosi Simmons. The Warhawks outshot MVSU 18-6 in the first half despite the game going into intermission even.
Pillon was back at it in the 55th minute after cleaning up a rebound on a shot from junior Karlea Fehr. It was the second game-winning goal of the year for Pillon and her seventh overall. Fehr made a deep run down the left side to setup the score.
The Warhawks capped it off in the 80th minute on Mitchell's goal. Sophomore Kylie Kukowski put in a cross from the left, and after redshirt-sophomore Antonia Land flicked a header in the box, Mitchell was there for the score.
ULM dictated possession the whole way and out-shot MVSU 32-12. Fehr registered nine shots while Pillon took eight.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Werther made six saves to run her record up to 4-0 on the year. Senior Cerene Arsenault and Tuckfield anchored the backline and played 90 minutes. 21 different student-athletes saw action for ULM.
The Warhawks will play their final non-conference game on Sunday when it hosts Central Arkansas at 4:00 p.m. at the ULM Soccer Complex.
