ULM Drops Sun Belt Home Opener to Georgia State

MONROE, La. -- Efficient nights by Jennifer McClendon and Kaitlyn Shearer were not enough as the ULM volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-16) decision to Georgia State Friday night at the Fant Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, La.

McClendon finished with four kills for the Warhawks (6-9, 0-2 Sun Belt). Shearer was just as effective in the effort, registering six kills on nine swings for a .556 efficiency mark.

Sophomore Taylor Zaeske led ULM with a team-high eight kills to go with four digs and an ace. Hope Pawlik tuned in six kills on 15 hits (.200) from the outside.

Marcela Araya recorded 22 digs, the 14th time she has topped double-digit digs this season. Bayleigh Hoffman added 18 assists and four digs as the setter.

After a tough first set, the Warhawks battled the Panthers (3-8, 1-1 Sun Belt) to the brink in a second stanza that included nine tie scores and three lead changes. With the score tied at 24-24, Georgia State would take advantage of an error and a kill by Kristina Stinson to take a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.

The second set ended up being the difference maker as ULM was defeated in the third stanza to move the Warhawks record to 6-9 overall and 0-2 in the Sun Belt.

ULM returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. against Texas State (7-7, 2-0 Sun Belt).
