MONROE, La. – Down a goal with under 13 minutes left to play, the ULM soccer program struck twice in a 1:37 span to come back and defeat Georgia State, 2-1 in front of a fired up crowd at the ULM Soccer Complex on Sunday.
Junior Karlea Fehr queued up the comeback in the 78th minute with a top-shelf shot from the left. The play got started on a run from redshirt-sophomore Antonia Land down the middle as she fed Fehr a through-ball down the left wing. Fehr took a couple dribbles and evened the score, 1-1.
The Warhawks (7-4-1, 1-1 SBC) got right back to work in the 80th minute as the duo of Fehr and Land were at it once again. Fehr made a deep run down the left side and crossed it perfectly to Land who found space in the middle of the penalty box and rifled a shot past the keeper to put ULM ahead, 2-1.
“I am very pleased with the team's effort to come back against a very good Georgia State team,” said ULM head coach Roberto Mazza. “These girls never stop working. They are a very resilient group that leaves everything on the field. We had a great crowd behind us and that really helped rally the girls to push even harder.”
It marked the fifth goal of the year for Fehr and fourth for Land.
The game was scoreless at halftime but Georgia State (3-6-3, 1-1 SBC) went up 1-0 in the 54th minute on a goal from Callie O'Connor. She finished in the lower left corner after a cross from the right.
The Warhawks outshot the Panthers 12-9 as sophomore Jenna Pillon took a game-high five, including three on goal. Sophomore Mary Ashton Lembo also registered a pair of shots.
In net, sophomore Katherine Werther improved her record to 6-1 after making six stops. She made a key save at the very end as she was able to get a hand on a GSU free kick that was destined for the lower left corner. Brie Haynes (3-5-2) took the loss for the Panthers.
Land and sophomore Whitney Tuckfield played 90 minutes for ULM. Land started as a center-back but pushed up to midfield when the Warhawks fell behind. ULM used a total of 19 student-athletes in the contest.
With the victory, the Warhawks surpassed last season's overall win total when they finished 6-12-1.
“We will enjoy this win for a short period as we prepare for defending conference champions South Alabama next,” Mazza said.
The Warhawks will take on the Jaguars on the road at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. They will close out the weekend at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Troy.
