LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Despite controlling much of the second half, it was Little Rock which scored late goal off a rebound-goal to take a 1-0 result over the ULM soccer program on Friday under the lights at the Coleman Sports & Recreation Complex.
The score came in the 78th minute after ULM's (6-9-1, 0-5 SBC) freshman goalkeeper Brooke-Lynn Scroggins made a diving block, however LR's (7-5-3, 2-1-2 SBC) Shannon Shields was there for the rebound and slotted in the game's lone tally.
The Warhawks outshot the Trojans 11-8 in the second half and held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
“Little Rock had a very good first half and came out with a lot of energy and purpose. The positive thing for us was that it was still 0-0 going into half,” said ULM head coach Roberto Mazza. “The second half is where we turned it around and outshot them and created a lot of chances. We missed some very good chances and Little Rock made its chance count.”
ULM's best chance came mid-way through the second period on a similar play that LR scored. Senior Karlea Fehr blasted a hard shot from the right that was tipped out by the Trojan keeper, but senior Mariah Mitchell's shot hit the post.
Fehr registered a game-high five shots with two on goal. Junior Jenna Pillon also recorded a pair of shots target as the Warhawks fired six shots on goal in the contest.
Scroggins took the loss even though she made 10 saves including a handful of diving stops that were seemingly destined for the back of the net. LR goalkeeper Sara Small picked up the win after making six saves.
“Scroggins had an unbelievable game for us,” Mazza said. “By far she is the best keeper in the conference.”
Scroggins was one of five ULM student-athletes to play 90 minutes in addition to senior Kelley O'Dwyer, junior Whitney Tuckfield, freshman Kelsey Dazalla and junior Mary Ashton Lembo.
“I am extremely proud of how our team performed in the second half. As a team, we are frustrated with the results we've been getting. Four of our five conference games have been by one goal. As soon as we get a bounce our way, we will be hard to beat,” Mazza said. “Our heads are still up and we know we still have a chance of making the conference tournament.”
The Warhawks will close out the weekend and at Arkansas State at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at the A-State Soccer Park. Follow the ULM soccer program on twitter, @ULM_Soccer, for live in-game updates of every game this season.
