JONESBORO, Ark. – In the final road game of the season for the ULM soccer program, Arkansas State scored a goal in each half to take a 2-0 result despite the Warhawks controlling most of the second half on Sunday at the A-State Soccer Park.
ULM (6-10-1, 0-6 SBC) outshot A-State (3-11-1, 1-4-1 SBC) 13-10 in the game, including a 9-4 disparity in the second half. The Warhawks also held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks in the contest.
“This was another game where I felt we had the better play but we just could not find the back of the net,” said ULM head coach Roberto Mazza. “We did a great job coming out of halftime and put a lot of pressure on them where we locked them up in their half. [Mary Ashton] Lembo had a great free kick that resulted in a great save. We had chances on corner kicks and [Karlea] Fehr labeled one from 25 yards out that missed the net by inches.”
The Red Wolves got on the board in the 15th minute after a line-drive cross from the left was kicked in from the middle of the box by Katey Carmichael.
A-State added on in the 88th minute on a high shot from the edge of the penalty box by Tayler Carter.
Senior Karlea Fehr tallied a game-high five shots including two on goal. Senior Mariah Mitchell fired three shots with two on goal, and senior Kelley O'Dwyer and junior Mary Ashton Lembo each registered a shot on target.
Lembo was on the field for the entire 90 minutes as well as junior Whitney Tuckfield, sophomore Danielle LaFrance and freshman Kelsey Dazalla in back.
In net, freshman Brooke-Lynn Scroggins made a trio of saves. Amanda Lee stopped six shots for the Red Wolves.
“We have three games left at home to win and make the tournament. We play our best at home and we will be ready to take each game one-by-one,” Mazza said.
The Warhawks will return home next weekend beginning with a 2:00 p.m. contest on Friday against Appalachian State at the ULM Soccer Complex. Follow the ULM soccer program on twitter, @ULM_Soccer, for live in-game updates of every game this season.
