Troy?s Early Strike Holds Up, 1-0 in Hard-Fought Battle

Soccer

MONROE, La. – Troy's Alissa Jones scored a goal in the third minute, and the Trojans hung in after intense 90 minutes over the ULM soccer program, 1-0 on Friday at the ULM Soccer Complex.

“I'm very proud of the way the girls played today. We gave up an early goal on a deflected shot, and other than that it was a tight first half,” said ULM head coach Roberto Mazza. “We came out of halftime with a lot of energy and momentum and had chances to tie the game.”

ULM (6-7-1, 0-3 SBC) held a slight 9-8 edge in corner kicks, while Troy (8-3, 1-1 SBC) was slightly ahead in shots on goal, 10-8.

“It was unfortunate that we ended up playing down a man for the last 27 minutes of the game. Though in the end, I was very pleased with our team's resiliency,” Mazza said.

The Warhawks played short-handed after a red card was issued in the 63rd minute.

Senior Karlea Fehr fired a team-high three shots, all on goal. Freshman Cke'Lana Caesar registered a pair of shots with one on net. Also recording shots in the game were juniors Jenna Pillon, Nancy Kirk, Whitney Tuckfield and sophomores Danielle Sabathe and Danielle LaFrance.

In net, freshman goalkeeper Brooke-Lynn Scroggins (2-5) had a huge outing which included nine saves including a few massive ones. Mikki Lewis (6-3) picked up the win for Troy after making eight saves.

In addition to Scroggins, senior Kelley O'Dwyer, freshman Kelsey Dazalla and Tuckfield played 90 minutes.

ULM saw its seven-game home unbeaten streak come to an end. The Warhawks are now 6-3-1 at the ULM Soccer Complex this season.

The Warhawks will close out the weekend at home when they face South Alabama on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the ULM Soccer Complex.
