Hot Start for ULM Not Enough in Loss to South Alabama

MONROE, La. -- ULM took a 2-0 lead after one inning of play, but South Alabama rallied and claimed a 9-4 win at Warhawk Field on Saturday night.

ULM led off the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back singles as ULM took a 1-0 lead. Keelin Rasch's double to right field to score Anthony Herrera and Rasch later came in to score on a RBI ground out by Justin Stawychny to set the tally at 2-0 in favor of the Warhawks after one.

South Alabama took a 4-2 lead as they scored one run in the top of the second and connected on a three-run homer in the top of the third. The visiting Jaguars added a single run in the fourth to push its lead to three runs at 5-2.

ULM held South Alabama scoreless in the fifth, but the Jaguars scored three runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-2.

In the home half of the sixth, the Warhawks plated of runs to trim the deficit to four runs (8-4). With one out in the frame, Stawychny was hit by a pitch and Nathan Pugh followed with a double to right center to put two in scoring position for the Warhawks. Danny Springer tallied a RBI as he singled through the left side (Stawychny scored) and Jacob Stockton followed with a sacrifice fly to right allowing Pugh to race home.

The Jaguars tacked on a run in the seventh to set the final tally at 9-4.

Brandon Bell (3-4) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits with one walks and three punchouts in four innings on the hill. Rasch had one hit, one RBI and one run to lead the Warhawks at the plate.

ULM and South Alabama will conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
