SAN MARCOS, Texas -- After falling, 5-1, in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, ULM (7-6, 1-2) responded with a 7-4 win over Texas State (5-9-1, 2-1) at the Bobcat Ballpark.
Texas State 5, ULM 1 (DH Game 1)
The Warhawks plated the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Robbie Podorsky reached on an error and moved to third on a double by Kodie Tidwell. Podorsky was able to cross home plate on a sacrifice fly by Keelin Rasch.
Texas State answered with a pair of unearned runs in the home half of the second to take a 2-1 lead. The Bobcats, highlighted by a two RBI single by Tanner Hill, added a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase its lead to four runs (5-1).
ULM was unable to push any runs across over the course of the final four innings in the loss to the Bobcats.
Brandon Bell (2-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Keegan Curtis closed out the game for ULM, pitching the final three innings.
Scott Grist (1-1) earned the win after allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks in eight innings on the hill.
ULM 7, Texas State 4 (DH Game 2)
ULM, like it did in game one of the doubleheader, scored the first run of the game. The Warhawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a RBI double (ground-rule) by Spencer Hemphill.
The Warhawks added two runs in the top of the fourth inning to push its advantage to three runs at 3-0. Nathan Pugh came in to score on a RBI double by Danny Springer and Springer later scored on a passed ball to give ULM its three-run lead.
Texas State responded with a trio of runs in the fifth inning. With the three runs in the frame, the Bobcats evened the game at 3-3 after five innings.
In the seventh, the Warhawks broke a 3-3 tie on a RBI single to left field by Pugh. An inning later, Springer tallied his second homer of the season, a solo-shot to left that pushed ULM's lead to two runs at 5-3.
The Bobcats answered with an unearned run in the eighth inning to close the gap to one run at 5-4.
ULM got a pair of runs in the ninth to extend its lead to three runs at 7-4. Hemphill delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to center field to give the Warhawks insurance runs as Pugh and Justin Stawychny scored.
In the ninth, Anthony Herrera closed the book on the Bobcats as he tossed a perfect frame and earned his first save of the 2015 season. Josh Leone earned the win in relief and improved to 1-0 after allowing on unearned run on one hit with one strikeout in two innings on the hill. Starter Trey Setzer earned a no-decision after logging six innings of work, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Montana Parsons (0-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering one earned run on five hits in three innings.
Four different Warhawks tallied multiple hit efforts as Keelin Rasch, Pugh, Springer and Hemphill combined for nine hits, six RBI and five runs scored. Kodie Tidwell finished 1-for-2 but reached base three other times as he walked twice and was hit by a pitch.
