UTA Staves Off ULM?s Second-Half Push

Women's Basketball

MONROE, La. – ULM's 12-0 run through the middle of the second half was not enough to overcome UTA's early start in a 60-50 defeat Thursday night.

“Defensively, it's pretty hard to complain about your effort when you held the opponent to 29 percent from the field,” head coach Jeff Dow said. “Obviously, if you hold someone to 29 percent from the field on your home floor, you have to find a way to win that game.”

The Warhawks trailed by 16 with 4:06 to play in the third quarter before Chelsea Tieuel hit a layup and three-pointer to cut the deficit to 46-35. Aundrea Davis closed the quarter with four made foul shots in the final 75 seconds, sandwiched around Ashley Aune's drawn charge.

ULM capped off its 12-0 run with Daja Chase's coast-to-coast drive at the 7:30 mark of the fourth quarter that got the home team within 46-42. The run lasted seven minutes and 11 seconds until Rebekah VanDijk knocked down a pair of free-throws that upped the UTA lead to 48-42 with 6:55 showing on the clock.

That burst by the Warhawks was also the first time they got into single digits since the early second quarter.

Alayshia Hunter had the first nine points for the Warhawks, who trailed 20-9 at the first intermission.

ULM will look to close out its four-game homestand on top when Texas State comes to town on Saturday. Tip-off is set for noon.

Inside (and beyond) the Box Score

-The four consecutive home games mark the most at ULM since Dec. 2-13, 2006. That year was also ULM's first in the Sun Belt and as the Warhawks.

-UTA's 28.6 percent (14-49) showing from the field was the lowest against ULM since LSU-Alexandria shot 23.9 percent (16-67) on Dec. 19. The Lady Mavs were also 6-for-24 in the second half.

-The Lady Mavs' 14 made field goals were the second-lowest ULM has allowed this year (13 against LSU-Shreveport, Nov. 18).

-The two three-pointers the Warhawks allowed marked the fourth time an opponent had that many or less in a game (Georgia State, Appalachian State had 2, LSU had 1).

-The Warhawks' 19 made free-throws were their second-most this season (28 at Southeastern Louisiana, Nov. 29).

-The eight UTA assists and four steals were both the second-fewest by a ULM opponent for the year.

-Alayshia Hunter's 16 points gives her 938 in her career. She is looking to become ULM's 18th member of the 1,000-point club.

-Hunter's three steals also tied her career-high (Feb. 28, 2015 at Appalachian State).

-Aundrea Davis was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line, both career-highs (was 5-for-5 at Stephen F. Austin, Nov. 21, 2014).
