MONROE, La. – ULM freshman quarterback Caleb Evans can add another award to his week as he has been named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Player of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday morning. The honor comes one day after Evans was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Evans tossed three touchdown passes in Saturday's 42-35 overtime win over South Alabama, a mark that is tied for the most by a Warhawk quarterback making his first start, and is the first time any ULM quarterback has thrown for three or more touchdowns since Kolton Browning threw five touchdowns in October 2013. Evans finished his first collegiate start 26-for-38 with three touchdowns and 279 yards passing. His 279 yards through the air is the second-most for a ULM quarterback making his first start, dating back to 1998, behind only Andre Vige's 322 yards passing in September 1998.
With Evans' three touchdowns against South Alabama, ULM has now had three different quarterbacks throw for two or more touchdowns in a game this season, joining Garrett Smith and Will Collins. This marks the second consecutive season that the Warhawks have had three different quarterbacks with multiple touchdown games, after they were one of just four FBS programs with that distinction during the 2015 campaign.
Evans and the Warhawks hit the road the next two weekends for Sun Belt Conference matchups at Georgia State (this Saturday) and Appalachian State (Nov. 19) before returning home to close the regular season against UL-Lafayette on December 3.
