MONROE, La. – Alton Clay Jr. won the weight throw at the 2016 Track & Field Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships with a personal-record, and Rochelle Roberts from the softball program hit .667 over the weekend as the duo earned Warhawk Male and Female of the Week, respectively.
Clay, from Vivian, La., fired the winning toss of 18.70m on his fourth of five throws. It was nearly a full meter farther than his previous personal-record of 17.78m set last season at the SBC Indoor Championships where he finished sixth. It also destroyed his 2016 season-best of 15.36m set at the Texas A&M Invitational.
Clay, a junior, became the first Warhawk to win the weight throw at a conference championship on the men's side in school history.
Roberts was named Co-MVP of the Tiger Classic after her stellar performance this past weekend. She led the Warhawks with a .667 batting average, 12 hits, 10 runs, two home runs and seven stolen bases (7-7).
The Vacaville, Calif., native started the weekend by eclipsing career bests after notching two home runs and five RBIs in a 14-10 win over Northern Kentucky. She also tied a career high with three stolen bases and scored two of the team's four runs in ULM's 4-3 triumph over host Tennessee State.
Roberts recorded multiple hits in every game and scored multiple runs in four of five games. She picked up her third career Warhawk of the Week accolade after previously winning on April 22, 2014 and Feb. 17, 2015.
