Mountaineers' Early Lead Too Much for ULM to Overcome

Women's Basketball

BOONE, N.C. -- Alayshia Hunter and Aundrea Davis combined for 31 points, but Appalachian State built an eight-point lead in the first quarter and eventually won 64-52 over the visiting Warhawks on Saturday afternoon.

Davis, Chelsea Tieuel and Ashley Aune had three-pointers to begin the game. ULM trailed 11-9 at the 5:30 mark of the opening quarter, but the Mountaineers scored seven of the next eight points to take an 18-10 lead at the intermission.

Appalachian State maintained between a six- and 12-point lead through the second quarter. Davis had two big flashes at the halfway point. She picked up a steal and fastbreak, left-handed layup while taking contact on a double-team, and then got another swipe on the ensuing possession and two more points after a give-and-go with Daja Chase.

The third quarter saw the Mountaineers post an 18-11 margin. Tieuel's three-pointer made it a 44-34 contest with 2:24 left in the period, but six straight App points sent the home team to the fourth quarter with a 50-34 lead, its largest of the game.

Madi Story, who came into the game as Appalachian State's leading scorer (13.6 ppg in Sun Belt play), scored eight of her game-high 18 in the third quarter.

ULM will fly back for two more home games this weekend. Little Rock comes in for a 5:15 p.m. Thursday matchup, followed by Arkansas State on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Inside (and beyond) the Box Score

-Appalachian State was 5-for-16 from behind the arc. Jeff Dow's ULM teams have held the Mountaineers to 12-of-55 three-point shooting in four games.

-The Warhawks forced 18 turnovers for the second consecutive game.

-ULM's 13 assists were its most since having 18 in the Jan. 21 win vs. Troy.

-The eight made three-pointers were ULM's most since having 12 in the Nov. 29 win at Southeastern Louisiana.

-The Warhawks grabbed 10 steals on the day. Their last double-digit output there was a dozen versus LSU-Alexandria (Dec. 19).

-Aundrea Davis tied a career-high of 15 points (Nov. 15 at LSU). In the past six games, she has been on the bench for just 25 combined minutes. Her six-game streak of 32 minutes or more comes after being in the 30s just once before all season (Nov. 15).

-Davis also recorded four assists for the third time this year.

-Alayshia Hunter led the team with 16 points, bringing her within 13 of the 1,000-point club. She is looking to become the program's 18th student-athlete to have that distinction.

-Daja Chase was third in the Sun Belt for rebounding (8.5 pg) and had nine on Saturday.

-Stephanie Ratliff tied a career-high of six rebounds in just eight minutes.
