BATON ROUGE, La. – In a game that was scoreless through the first three innings, the ULM softball squad dropped its game to No. 5 LSU, 8-0, Tuesday night inside Tiger Park.

“When you are playing against a team of this caliber you have to play close to a perfect game,” ULM head softball coach Corey Lyon said. “(LSU) has great hitters. They are going to take advantage of any mistakes that you make and they did.”

Junior Melanie Coyne (7-4) held LSU (14-2) scoreless until her command escaped her in the bottom of the fourth inning. After walking two batters and allowing a single to load the bases, Coyne was tagged for a double by Tiger designated player Alayna Falcon that drove in two.

LSU senior third baseman Jenna Kraemer followed that up by also scoring two runners, this time on a single to left that was mishandled by junior Rochelle Roberts. Tiger sophomore second baseman Sydney Bourg rounded out the scoring in the sixth on a standup triple that hit the centerfield fence which ended Coyne's night and stretched LSU's advantage to 6-0.

The Tigers used three hits and two walks to score two runs and end the game in the bottom half of the fifth inning.

ULM (11-5) was only able to muster two hits in 17 at bats, one each from senior shortstop Faith Bohack and junior centerfielder Sidney Coy. Bohack and Coy also stole a base to get into scoring position. Between the four Warhawk pitchers, seven walks were issued.

“It's about competing for seven innings,” Lyon said. “I felt like we did a great job of competing for three innings. When things kind of went south in the fourth, you could just feel the air kind of go out. Even when you face adversity throughout the game, or give up some runs, you have got to be able to claw your way back into it. I would have liked to have seen us compete a little more in the box. We put together some good at bats, but I also felt like we gave up some opportunities to score runs. We are not going to dwell on it. We are going to take what we did, hopefully learn from it and come back and try to be better this weekend.”

The Warhawks will now turn their focus to the Crimson Classic, a tournament hosted by Alabama, this weekend. Their first game will come Friday against DePaul at 1:30 p.m. with another following immediately after versus Alabama at 4 p.m. CT.
