MONROE, La. – A combined undefeated weekend from the ULM men's and women's basketball programs resulted in senior Majok Deng and sophomore Daja Chase winning Warhawk Male and Female of the Week, respectively, announced Tuesday.
Deng, who was also named Sun Belt Conference Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday, earned All-Conference First-Team honors on Tuesday. Over the weekend, he helped extend ULM's winning streak to nine games with victories over Georgia Southern and Georgia State. Deng averaged 19.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks while shooting .556 percent from the field.
The Adelaide, Australia product started it off with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds vs. the Eagles. He followed it up with a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds against the Panthers.
It was the 11th time this season that he scored at least 20 points in a game. Deng has scored at least 13 points in 22 of his last 24 outings.
Deng ended the season as the SBC scoring champion both overall and in conference-only games. He also finished first in the league in blocks, third in defensive rebounds, third in minutes, sixth in three-pointers made, seventh in overall rebounding and eighth in free throw percentage.
Chase was instrumental in her team closing its season with back-to-back home wins, and her Saturday performance was arguably her best as a Warhawk. Chase scored a career-high 19 points, including a swish on the team's final shot of the year. That basket sealed an 82-68 win that included a 50-point second half, ULM's most against a Sun Belt team in a half since Feb. 2014.
Chase, an Ouachita Parish HS product, also committed just one turnover in 37 minutes against the Panthers.
Her 10 points and nine rebounds were the difference in a 59-49 win over Georgia Southern that also saw the Warhawks hold a 41-32 margin on the boards. Chase ended the season ranking third and 10th in the league for rebounding (8.3 pp) and minutes (32.2 ppg), respectively.
