ULM Outlasts Five-Hour Delay With 3-2 Win Over UTA

Baseball

ARLINGTON, Texas – Brayden Bouchey's 10 strikeouts and Kyle Schimpf's first career home run powered ULM to its second win in a row over UT Arlington, 3-2. First pitch was delayed five hours due to showers and lightning.

ULM (13-18, 4-7 SBC) scored all of its runs in the fourth inning. Nathan Pugh drew a one-out walk and sped home from first just moments after on a Spencer Hemphill double to the left-center wall. Kyle Schimpf eventually came to the plate and lined a two-run homer inside the foul pole in right field.

UTA (17-15, 4-7 SBC) had gotten on the board with two outs in the third after an infield single. Bouchey came back from the ULM outburst with a shutdown inning, retiring the Mavs in order.

The Mavs got within 3-2 after a Quintin Rohrbaugh triple to left center led to Darien McLemore's sacrifice fly to right field.

Bouchey ended his night on a high note. The first batter after the seventh-inning stretch reached on an error and moved to second on a bunt. An infield single followed, then Bouchey struck RJ Williams out on three pitches before getting Brady Cox, a .385 hitter, to ground out after eight pitches.

Herrera pitched a perfect eighth inning and then faced a jam in the ninth. An error and sacrifice bunt made it a mirror image of the seventh, but a first-pitch flyout to right field and lineout to Danny Springer at first base ended the game.

Diamond Notes…

-The rain delay marked the fourth series in five weekends that ULM had to deal with weather. The Warhawks were forced to play a doubleheader to begin the South Alabama series and had back-to-back home swings against Texas State and Dallas Baptist moved to those stadiums.

-The first game of the Georgia State series (April 10, 2015) was halted in the second inning and did not resume until the following day.

-ULM is looking for its first sweep since Feb. 28-March 1, 2015 against Sam Houston State. The Warhawks won the last two contests in the 2015 UTA series.

-Brayden Bouchey's 10 strikeouts were his second-most as a Warhawk (12 against Appalachian State, March 25).

-He has 54 strikeouts in 44 IP on the year after recording 15 in 36 1/3 IP the previous year.

-Anthony Herrera's save was his fourth of the year and 10th in college. His two innings on the hill were his most when recording a save.

-Brian Barefoot is 5-for-11 in the last three games while hitting safely in five of his last six starts.

-Spencer Hemphill hit his 12th career double.
