ULM?s Bid for Sweep Falls Short at UTA

Baseball

ARLINGTON, Texas – A five-run fourth inning for the UTA Mavericks was enough to defeat ULM 8-4 on Sunday afternoon and end its shot for the road sweep.

UTA (18-15, 5-7 SBC) scored as many runs in that frame as it had in the first two games against ULM. Jerame Littell singled up the middle that increased their lead to 4-2, then Darien McLemore doubled to left center that emptied the bases. He ultimately scored on a wild pitch for an 8-2 margin.

McLemore's homer and Quintin Rohrbaugh's sacrifice fly put UTA on the board in the first, but ULM responded with two runs as well. Spencer Hemphill, as he did on Saturday, doubled to left field and scored Nathan Pugh from first. Cody Stone's groundout tied it.

ULM (13-19, 4-8 SBC) closed the gap to 8-4 in the top of the eighth, all with nobody on and two outs. Nathan Pugh reached on an error by the third baseman, and Spencer Hemphill walked on four pitches. Kyle Schimpf dropped a blooper in between three Mavericks in shallow center field to score Pugh. Danny Springer then doubled down the left field line after a nine-pitch at-bat, but two Warhawks were stranded in scoring position.

Brandon Bell started for the Warhawks and was charged with the loss. McLemore drove in four runs on three hits to lead the Mavs.
