JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State scored four runs in the third inning and ultimately came out on top over ULM, 8-1, in Friday night's series opener.
The Red Wolves (16-21, 6-13 SBC) struck first when Ty White led off the bottom of the first with a home run to right field. They made it a 5-0 game when a Tony Ortiz double to begin the third was followed by two bunt singles and a sacrifice fly.
ULM (15-23, 6-10 SBC) got one of the runs back in the following frame. Spencer Hemphill doubled and scored one pitch later via a Jacob Stockton single through the middle.
Starter Chris Hunt pitched seven innings before being relieved by Tyler Schwaner. Arkansas State's Cody Jackson went the distance.
Diamond Notes…
-Danny Springer tied a career-high of three hits (including a pair of doubles). His last such game accomplishing either feat was April 26, 2015 at Georgia Southern.
-Tyler Schwaner has appeared in back-to-back games, his first trip to the mound since April 2 at South Alabama.
-ULM struck out just twice, tying a season-low (Feb. 27 at Western Carolina) for a full game.
-The Warhawks' Wednesday night game saw 17 pitchers used over the course of 14 innings.
