Clutch Hitting, Pitching Earn Herrera, Coyne Warhawk of the Week Honors

Softball

MONROE, La. – Each stepping up big both in the circle and at the plate, Anthony Herrera from ULM baseball and Melanie Coyne from softball were named Warhawk Male and Female of the Week winners, respectively.

Herrera had a big week on the mound last week as he moved into sole possession of second place in career saves. Herrera picked up a trio of saves, including a pair at Troy to push his career saves total to 15.

Against Nicholls State, Herrera recorded the final three outs, two via strikeout, as ULM claimed a 3-1 win. On Saturday night at Troy, Herrera tossed three shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk with one strikeout in ULM's 6-2 win, evening the series at one game apiece. In Sunday's finale, Herrera again went multiple innings as he notched save number three on the week in ULM's 4-3 win over the Trojans.

Herrera also record multiple hit efforts and multiple RBI efforts in the final two games at Troy as he tallied two hits and two RBI in game two and in game three. For the week, Herrera tallied six hits, six RBI and one run scored.

Herrera now has nine saves on the season and he is tied for second in single-season saves (Bobby Carro, 2001). On the career side, Herrera's 15 saves are the most since Mark Wisniewski posted 20 saves from 1982-85.

At the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championships, Coyne shined in a 2-1 opening round victory for the Warhawks over Georgia Southern. It marked the third consecutive year that ULM won its first round game at the conference tournament.

Coyne tossed a gem on Wednesday morning, limiting the Eagles to just one run. She didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. She struck out five batters and threw a flawless one-two-three seventh inning to seal the victory.

At the plate, the Huntington Beach, Calif., native went two-for-three with a double and a run scored. She singled in the first inning and scored on a double by Cheyanne Lyon. Coyne later ripped a double to left field in the fifth frame.

It marked Coyne's third career Warhawk of the Week accolade.

The Warhawks will take on Georgia State in the second round on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in Mobile, Ala.
