MONROE, La. – ULM football players reported back to campus and went through an opening day of team and positional meetings on Wednesday in preparation for the start of fall practice on Thursday morning.
“We are really excited about getting going. The main thing is that you have to get everyone back in a routine and reteach them how you want to practice and move around the field,” stated Warhawk head coach Matt Viator. “In addition to installing a lot of offense, defense and special teams, it's also reteaching what we taught in the spring and what we want to get accomplished.”
Viator, who enters his first season on the ULM sideline this fall, wants to carry over the lessons of spring camp, he and his staff's first opportunity with the team, into preseason camp.
“We want to build off of the spring. We also have the walk-throughs in August camp, which we didn't in the spring. It allows us to take some things from spring ball, put them in walk-through and stuff like that. It will be a little different, but the bases of what we taught them is the same. It's just a little hotter now.”
The Warhawks will begin the fall with a couple days of practice in shorts and then shells before going to full pads beginning Monday morning.
Daily practices will take place each morning from 8:40-10:55 a.m. on the practice fields and are open to the public. The team will also have an hour long walk-though, starting tomorrow and going until August 17 (most nights), beginning at 7:20 p.m. inside JPS Field at Malone Stadium.
The Warhawks' 'Meet the Team' event will take place on Friday, August 12, beginning at 6:45 p.m., followed by the first scrimmage of the fall on August 13 at 6:30 p.m. at JPS Field at Malone Stadium. Following a week a practice, the second scrimmage will take place the following Saturday (8/20), at the same time.
ULM classes begin on Monday, August 22, with the Warhawks moving to afternoon practices that week, culminating in the ULM Athletic Department's 'The Pursuit' kickoff event on Thursday, August 25. Information about The Pursuit can be found via this link.
The 2016 season kicks off on Saturday, September 3 as the Warhawks host Southern University. Season and single game tickets are available by calling 342-HAWK or via this link.
