MONROE, La. – The heat returned for ULM's Tuesday morning practice as the development and implementation of schemes continued to be added onto as the Warhawks tick closer to Saturday's first scrimmage and, eventually, the season opener against Southern on September 3.
Despite the sixth consecutive day of fall camp, the intensity on the field continued to grow as the heat rose and players shook off any possible fatigue.
“I think the progress of this team has been good,” head coach Matt Viator stated. “We've been getting some good work done each morning. The first seven days of camp are really heavy install days. We're trying to see improvement, effort and attitude.”
Viator keyed on effort over execution during this period of practice with installation of new plays and groupings.
“I like the fact that we are giving really good effort. At this time of camp, there is so much install going that people make mistakes. We are excited, however, because we are not seeing the same mistakes day after day. The players are really tuned in and the effort is good. When there are mistakes, they are being corrected, and that's all you can ask at this point.”
The practice schedule throughout the week leads up to Friday's 'Meet the Team' event beginning at 6:45 p.m., followed by the first scrimmage of the fall on August 13 at 6:30 p.m. at JPS Field at Malone Stadium. Following a week of practice, the second scrimmage will take place the following Saturday (8/20), at the same time.
Daily practices will continue to take place mornings from 8:40-10:55 a.m. on the practice fields and are open to the public. The team will also continue hour-long walk-throughs until August 17 (most nights), beginning at 7:20 p.m. inside JPS Field at Malone Stadium.
ULM classes begin on Monday, August 22, with the Warhawks moving to afternoon practices that week, culminating in the ULM Athletic Department's 'The Pursuit' event on Thursday, August 25. Information about The Pursuit can be found at ulm.edu/thepursuit.
