MONROE, La. – Senior
Danielle LaFrance made her final home appearance a memorable one, scoring on a penalty kick early in the second half, and junior goalkeeper
Brooke-Lynn Scroggins made seven saves to lead the ULM soccer team to a 1-0 win over Arkansas State on Sunday, Oct. 15. With the victory, the Warhawks improved to 3-12-1 overall and 3-5 in Sun Belt play.
Â
The lone goal in the match came in the 58th minute as ULM was awarded a penalty kick off a handball committed inside the box by Arkansas State. LaFrance capitalized on the opportunity, striking a line drive just to the left of ASU junior goalkeeper Kelsey Ponder into the back of the net.
Â
Arkansas State (8-6-1, 4-4-1 Sun Belt) out-shot the Warhawks, 15-9, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. The Red Wolves held a 9-4 advantage in shots in the first half. LaFrance produced two of ULM's six shots on goal. ASU freshman Sarah Sodoma was credited with a game-high three shots on goal while Ponder finished with five saves.
Â
Scroggins, who made six of her seven saves in the first half, earned her second shutout of the season and eighth of her career.
Â
ULM head coach
Keyton Wheelock was pleased with the way her team rallied around the seniors on their special day.
Â
"It wasn't the prettiest soccer you can play, but the heart was there," Wheelock said. "Those six seniors deserved the right for the team to play for them today."
Â
The Senior Day win helped the Warhawks keep their hopes of qualifying for the Sun Belt Tournament alive. ULM closes out its conference schedule next weekend with road matches at Appalachian State and Georgia Southern.
Â
"We don't sugar coat things around here," Wheelock said. "They know they've got to win to make conference tournament, and what we've done so far isn't enough. We're going to work, and they know that."
Â
ULM kicks off its final weekend of Sun Belt play with a road match at Appalachian State on Friday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m., followed by the regular-season finale at Georgia Southern on Sunday, Oct. at 11 a.m.
