MONROE, La. – Marcus Green left his tracks all over JPS Field in ULM's home football finale at Malone Stadium.Â
Green returned a kickoff for a 95-yard touchdown and caught eight passes for a career-best 193 yards and another score on Saturday. In the game, he set school records with six kickoff returns for 206 yards and 418 all-purpose yards.
Green's heroics helped ULM keep pace with Arkansas State in a wild shootout, but the Red Wolves surged late and claimed a 67-50 win over the Warhawks.
"I had no idea about the records," Green said." I mean, I knew about the kick return record for touchdowns but the all-purpose yard record and all that, I had no idea. I just wanted to come out with a win tonight and we weren't able to do that. Hats off to Arkansas State, they did a great job tonight."
ULM made four turnovers in the game, including three in the first half. Arkansas State scored 14 points off its takeaways, including an 85-yard interception return by Blaise Taylor with 56 seconds remaining in the contest for the final margin. Â
"The three turnovers in the first half really hurt us," ULM head coach
Matt Viator said. "From the start of the game … it was one of those games where we needed to keep pace. The three turnovers in the first half really hurt us."
Green broke the kickoff return mark previously held by Bryant Jacobs (five returns for 175 yards vs. Idaho in 2001). The single-game record for all-purpose yards topped the mark set by Calvin Dawson against Middle Tennessee in 2007 (329 all-purpose yards: 180 rushing, 67 receiving and 82 kickoff returns).
Green's performance was the latest in an amazing junior campaign. He's now the national leader with the four kickoff returns for scores and recorded his third 100-yard receiving game of the season.
"Four kickoff returns in one year for
Marcus Green," Viator said. "That's impressive."
ULM quarterback
Caleb Evans completed 21-of-37 passes for 454 yards and four touchdowns and rushed 17 times for 61 yards and two more scores, but was also intercepted three times.
Arkansas State (7-3, 6-1) amassed a school- and Sun Belt-record 781 yards of total offense to outlast ULM (4-7, 4-4). Quarterback Justice Hansen completed 26-of-38 passes for 520 yards and four touchdowns. Justin McInnis caught nine balls for 211 yards and Warren Wand rushed 21 times for 173 yards and a touchdown.
"They're just hard to defend," Viator said. "We call them 50-50 balls, but today, they were 90-10 balls. That hurts. That's demoralizing really to have an opportunity to get them off the field and they big-boy us. They made some great catches too."
Green made his presence known from the opening drive. He made an incredible 44-yard running catch to the Arkansas State 32, then finished the drive on the next play with a 32-yard scoring pass from Evans for an early 7-0 lead.
Arkansas State answered with a rapid-fire response, going 72 yards in eight plays for a 4-yard touchdown pass from Hansen to Chris Murray.
ULM constructed a 16-play, 99-yard drive that chewed 7:02 off the clock to take a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter. Evans wrapped the march with a 2-yard touchdown run, his 12th of the season.
Hansen hooked up with Blake Mack for a 5-yard touchdown with 13:57 left in the second quarter, capping an 87-yard drive that needed just five plays.Â
Playing his final home game, senior
Brian Williams ran down a 29-yard touchdown pass from Evans on ULM's next series in the second quarter. ULM needed five plays to cover 75 yards on the drive to go ahead again, 21-14.
Arkansas State tied the game at 21-21 on an 82-yard touchdown run by Wand. The tackle-breaking scamper came on second-and-24 with 10:15 left in the second quarter.
Â
ULM's third turnover of the first half allowed Arkansas State to take a 28-21 lead with 5:13 left in the second quarter. Ronheen Bingham recovered a
Kayin White fumble at the ULM 36 and the Red Wolves scored three plays later on Hansen's 4-yard touchdown pass to Christian Booker.Â
Prior to the fumble, Evans tossed two interceptions in the first two quarters.
"The three turnovers are the biggest key," Viator said at halftime. "The kids are hanging in there, but you've got to hang on to the ball and keep moving it. We can't turn the ball over or give up big plays defensively."
ULM and Arkansas State combined for 49 points, 28 first downs and 680 total yards in the first half alone as the Red Wolves took a 28-21 lead into the break.
Arkansas State took the opening kickoff of the second half and moved 75 yards on six plays, scoring on an 8-yard run by Hansen to go up 35-21.
Things looked bleak for ULM when Hansen extended the Red Wolves lead to 42-21 with a 38-yard touchdown run.
But Green scored his fourth kickoff return touchdown with a 95-yard jaunt in the third quarter. Green turned the corner and jetted untouched to tighten the score at 42-28.
"I thought the kickoff return gave us back a jolt there," Viator said. "That was a great job by Marcus."
Green's big return seemed to recharge ULM. After a defensive stop, Evans hit
RJ Turner for a 55-yard reception and then found Turner again on a 27-yard touchdown strike with 4:54 left in the third quarter. ULM covered 89 yards in six plays to pull within a touchdown at 42-35.Â
Arkansas State's offense kept coming though, answering with a 71-yard scoring drive. Hansen found Murray for a 17-yard touchdown pass to go up 49-35 with 1:30 left in the third quarter.
ULM kept pace with a 6-yard touchdown run by Evans to finish off a seven-play, 46-yard drive.
Harrison Heim dropped the ball on the PAT kick attempt but ULM's punter tossed a pass to
Ty Shelby for a two-point conversion and a 49-43 score.
The Red Wolves needed just two plays and 40 seconds to move 73 yards and go up 57-43 on Johnston White's 34-yard touchdown run. Hansen tossed to Mack for the two-point conversion pass.
Evans directed a five-play, 64-yard drive and zipped a 35-yard touchdown pass to
D'Marius Gillespie. ULM trailed 57-50 with 9:53 remaining in the game.
"When the cut it seven, I thought we had a chance," Viator said.
The Red Wolves made it a two-score game at 60-50 on Sawyer Williams' 46-yard field goal with 1:42 to go.
The Warhawks were driving when Evans made an errant pass trying to throw the ball away and Taylor picked it off and returned it for the TD and final margin.
"All in all, disappointing," Viator said. "I think the kids were excited to play today."
Last call: The radio broadcast booth was a busy stop pregame as numerous well-wishers stopped by to see Frank Hoffmann, who called the final ULM game of his 42-year career.
ULM brought Hoffmann down to the field at halftime, showed a highlight video on the scoreboard and presented him with a framed No. 42 jersey to commemorate his four decades of service. The ceremony took place at the 42-yard line.
"That was a lot of fun to remember," Hoffmann said when he was back on the air. "It was very moving, I have to admit."
