STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State shot 56 percent (42-of-75) from the field and four starters scored in double figures as the Cowgirls defeated ULM, 112-58, Thursday, Dec. 21 in Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU (9-2) eclipsed the century mark for the second-straight game and the 112 points matched its single-game scoring record (previous: vs. Tulsa, February 1978).
Â
ULM's only lead came at 2-1 on
Arsula Clark's jumper in the lane 29 seconds into the game. OSU answered with a 15-3 run and took a 16-5 lead on a three-pointer from Jaden Hobbs. The Cowgirls got 12 first-quarter points from Loryn Goodwin and her jumper at the buzzer gave OSU a 25-12 advantage.
Â
The Cowgirls took control of the game with a 25-8 spurt to open the second quarter. OSU hit 63 percent (12-of-19) of its field-goal attempts, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, while scoring a school-record 35 points in the quarter en route to a 60-29 halftime lead.
Â
The Warhawks were outscored, 33-13, in the third quarter. OSU reached the century mark on Abbie Winchester's layup with 7:04 left in the fourth quarter and built its largest lead at 105-48 on Shakila Small's layup with 5:51 to play.
Â
OSU outrebounded ULM, 44-26, and outscored the Warhawks in fast-break points, 23-2.
Â
"Clearly, Oklahoma State is an outstanding team that will be cracking the Top 25 soon, and I would suspect they'll be in the hunt for the Big 12 Championship," ULM head coach
Jeff Dow said. "They've averaged 110 points in their last two games and have a terrific balance with the inside play of their senior post players Kaylee Jensen and Mandy Coleman, combined with sixth-year senior point guard Loryn Goodwin. It's pretty apparent why they were able to beat then-seventh ranked UCLA so handily, and why their only two losses have come on the road to two undefeated teams, in Mississippi State and Tennessee.
Â
"I understand the length and size advantage they had, but nonetheless, we have to find a way to come up with more than three offensive rebounds. Defensively, we need to make significant improvement in getting back in transition on a consistent basis. Both of those are effort based to an extent and things we have to commit to every game."
Â
Goodwin scored a game-high 27 points to pace the Cowgirls. She connected on 10-of-15 field-goal attempts, including 2-of-3 from behind the three-point arc, grabbed seven records and recorded eight assists in 24 minutes.
Â
OSU also got 14 points from Braxtin Combs, 11 from Areanna Combs (6 steals) and 11 from Kaylee Jensen.
Â
Gabriella Cortez led ULM with 10 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes. Clark and
London Archer contributed eight points each.
Â
ULM opens Sun Belt play with a two-game road trip to Arkansas State (Dec. 29 at 5 p.m.) and Little Rock (Dec. 31 at 2 p.m.).
