LUBBOCK, Texas – ULM senior Anthony Herrera has been named one of the nine national semifinalists for the 2017 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, given annually to the nation's best player who contributes both in the field and on the mound for his team.
Herrera, the only player from the Sun Belt Conference to be featured on the initial watch list or the semifinalist listing, is one of three semifinalists not from a Power Five school, while the initial Olerud watch list featuring 25 players saw 14 student-athletes come from Power Five conferences.
The McKinney, Texas native has started and played in 52 of ULM's 53 games in the field and has 20 relief appearances on the mound entering Friday night's game. As a shortstop, Herrera has a .244 batting average with 15 RBI at the plate, while tallying a .953 fielding percentage and team-leading 147 assists in the field.
On the mound, Herrera has a team-best 2.75 ERA and 45 strikeouts, the second-most on the roster, with seven saves this season. His save on April 13 at Texas State made him the ULM program's all-time saves leader, passing Mark Wisniewski, who had 20 career saves from 1982-1985. Herrera currently sits with 23 career saves entering Friday night, including notching 10 saves last season as a junior tied the program record single season saves mark.
