MONROE, La. – Senior
Danielle Sabathe scored an early goal, freshman
Taylor Altieri added a late insurance goal and junior goalkeeper
Brooke-Lynn Scroggins made five saves, as the ULM soccer team shut out Coastal Carolina, 2-0, Sunday, Sept. 24 in a Sun Belt match.
Â
It marked the third time the Chanticleers (7-4, 2-2 Sun Belt) had been shutout this season.
Â
"I'm pleased with the effort from the team today, and getting the first win is big for the team's confidence," ULM head coach
Keyton Wheelock said.
"The two goals were both great finishes and our backline took care of business. Coastal Carolina has some quality attackers and they were able to shut them down. To see the team battle and continue to work the way they have all season, it's nice to get our first win in conference early on."
Sabathe gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute, chipping in a shot off her right foot over CCU freshman goalkeeper Rylee Atteberry into the top right corner of the goal.
Â
"When I got the ball and got around the center back, I saw the goalkeeper off the line, so I chipped the ball over her head," Sabathe said. "I knew it was a goal as soon as the ball came off my foot."
Â
ULM extended its lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute as Altieri buried her first career goal off a hard shot from the left wing into the back of the net.
Â
"We came into today's match determined to put up a fight," Altieri said. "I just wanted to shoot the ball as hard as I could, and from my angle, I knew I had to place the ball somewhere from the center to the far-right side (of the goal)."
Â
"That second goal reassured us," Sabathe said. "After it went in, the energy level and focus really picked up. Things really came together this afternoon. We should have more confidence moving forward, so we can put more wins on the board in the conference race."
Â
Scroggins recorded her seventh career shutout, with five saves.
Â
"Scroggins has been great in net all year," Wheelock said. "It's fantastic to see her finally get a shutout. She's been called on to make some big saves, and she had to make some great corner-kicks saves as well as a few point-blank saves today to preserve the shutout.
CCU out-shot ULM, 12-8, with each team directing five shots on goal.
Â
"Today was not perfect, but when mistakes happened, teammates picked each other up and took care of business" Wheelock said. "Having each other's back was huge today. We will enjoy this for 24 hours and get back to work as we have to prepare for every match in conference as they are all crucial points."
Â
ULM (1-10-1, 1-2 Sun Belt) resumes league play with a match at Little Rock on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
