Volleyball Drops Three-Set Loss to Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – The ULM Warhawks could not stop the Red Wolves of Arkansas State on Saturday night (Oct. 13) dropping their seventh conference match of the season in a 3-0 road decision.

"Not the result that we wanted tonight but I saw definite improvements as we progressed through the match," said first year head coach Russ Friedland. "Tonight we fought. It was a fight that we haven't seen in a while so it was nice to see us get that back tonight. There's some things that we saw out of our team tonight that doesn't show up on a scoresheet. And it's those pieces that we will look to build on this week as we prepare for two more high level matches at home."

Senior Sarah Woods led the Warhawks for the second consecutive match, with eight kills. Leading all players was Arkansas State's Carlisa May, who recorded 14 kills in the Red Wolves' win.

Eight total Warhawks tallied kills in the loss including Woods, redshirt-junior Catherine Griffith and senior Taylor Wood ranked second and third in the category with seven and four kills respectively.

Senior setter Presleigh Williams finished with 11 assists and nine digs. Freshman Kate Blasingame, sophomore Lauren Appleman, and junior Kate McKay each added double-digit digs to the Warhawks stat sheet as well.

ULM hit a match-best .162 in set three, laying down 12 kills behind a .324 kill percentage.

Both teams committed multiple errors in the match, combining both attack and service errors- the Warhawks and the Red Wolves each had 26 miscues on the night.

ASU opened up the match claiming eight of the first ten points, leaving the Warhawks trailing 8-2. ULM was able to pull within four of the Red Wolves (18-14) after an attack error by Arkansas State, but Arkansas State was quick to recover and after a final kill by Griffith gave ULM its 17th point, ASU went on to win the final three points and the match with a 25-17 decision.

Set two ended with the same 25-17 score weighing in favor of Arkansas State, but ULM was the one who drove out to a 10-7 lead to start the match. The Warhawks actually won the first three points of the match with a kill from Griffith and two from Woods.

Arkansas State would ignite a seven-point rally at the 10-7 mark to take a 14-10 lead over the Warhawks. ULM would score three of the next five, but another rally by the Red Wolves put them ahead 22-13. ULM made another shot at ASU's lead with kills from Wood and Appleman, but back-to-back errors by the Warhawks would give Arkansas State the win.

Set three was a late effort by the Warhawks, who from the end, outscored the Red Wolves 12-5. Unfortunately, on the front end of the match, trailed 9-19 after a service ace by ASU's Callie Weaver. Arkansas State would go on to win 25-22.

"We were better mentally tonight and that helped us to a late push in the third set," set Friedland. "Our bench was great tonight too. Lots of positive energy and support. That's a huge part of our team mentality and culture. Everything we do, we do together and I love that about this team."

ULM falls to 7-14 on the season with an 0-8 mark in conference play. The Warhawks will return home to Monroe for homecoming weekend, when they host Georgia State on Thursday (Oct. 18) and Georgia Southern on Friday (Oct. 19).
