Speed Never Slumps; Warhawks Prepare for Final Fall Scrimmage

Softball
MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team is preparing for its final fall scrimmage on Thursday, October 18th, when they host Kilgore College. First pitch of the double-header is slated for 2:30 p.m. at the ULM softball complex.

"This team has so much potential," said first year head coach Molly Fichtner. "We've already seen so much growth, but we have a lot to learn still."

Fichtner and the 2018-19 squad have already played three double-headers this fall, defeating Bossier Parish Community College, Vernon College, and most recently Northeast Texas Community College.

"We have been focusing a lot of our practice time on the defense, perfecting our fielding and defending skills," Fichtner said. "I'm extremely happy with the progress we've made and it's definitely become one of our strengths."

In each of their games this season, the Warhawks have donned a different line-up, with both new and returning players seeing the plate at different times in the line-up. Fichtner says she plans to continue to move players around in the line-up for the rest of the fall.

"We've been putting the girls in challenging positions this fall," said Fichtner. "We're trying to create a sense of urgency in them and it has been really good to see some of them step up in these particularly challenging situations to lead their team."

Looking at her team as the fall season winds down, Fichtner is optimistic in their ability to succeed in the spring.

"The team still has your typical fall-season issues, getting everyone on the same page, in the same mindset and game plan…. But every day we're excited to get out there and put in the work to become a more cohesive unit, working for the same goal."

"Our pitching staff needs some time to gain some experience," Fichtner commented. "But our depth on the mound sets us up for success in the long haul. These fall scrimmages really help us in building their confidence and experience in preparation for the spring."

Fans will see plenty of new faces on the diamond this year, with the addition of seven new freshman and junior transfer Nykiah Hines. "The freshmen and Nykiah bring a lot of speed to the roster, something we already had a lot of, and one thing for sure is- speed never slumps. Speed never slumps in softball."

The Warhawks were originally scheduled to host the Rangers on Wednesday (Oct. 17) but the games were moved due to potential rain.

ULM will also be hosting their fall Home Run Derby this Saturday, October 20th at noon at the ULM softball complex. Visit the following link for more information on how to join in on the fun!
