ARLINGTON, Texas – Freshman
Kate Blasingame recorded her third-straight double-double tonight (Oct. 26), as the ULM volleyball fell to UT-Arlington, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22). The Warhawks will travel to San Marcos on Sunday, to face league leading Texas State at noon.
"Tonight was a real struggle for us all around," said head coach
Russ Friedland. "We couldn't find our feet until a great run in the middle of the second set. We progressively got better through the match but it just wasn't enough to counteract their attack."
ULM (9-15, 2-9) jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in set one with kills from freshman
Cali Assaley and redshirt-junior
Catherine Griffith. The teams then traded blows tying the set at 16-16 before UTA (14-8, 8-4) used a 9-2 run, capped by a kill from Madison Hill, to take the opening set (25-18). Hill led all hitters with five kills in the first set.
"We are playing really hard for short stints throughout the match," said Friedland. "I've said it before in matches with similar outcomes, we just need to find a way fight like that for entire sets. That's where we are coming up short. I love seeing that fight in the team and as soon as we can learn how to transfer the things we work on in practice to game day, we will see great success."
The Mavericks took the second set 25-20 and never trailed in the frame. Trailing UTA 16-8, ULM used a 7-0 run to get back into the set (16-15), but the Mavericks responded and went on to outscore the Warhawks 9-5 to close out the set and pick up a 25-20 win.
The Warhawks made a valiant attempt to fight off the sweep, holding onto a late 22-20 lead, but were unable to hold off the Mavericks who sparked a 5-0 run to close out the final set and win the third, 25-22.
Blasingame's double-double came in the form of 12 kills and 11 digs. Blasingame was the only Warhawk with double-digit kills; Griffith and Worley followed with seven and six kills respectively.
Both teams recorded nine blocks, but it was Griffith who earned all three solo blocks in the match. Blasingame, Worley, Assaley,
Sarah Woods, and Alix Chrisite all added blocks in the loss as well.
"Kate had a great outing tonight. She had eight of her 12 kills in the third set, which is a feat for any hitter. Cat had a great night at the net adding six blocks, including her three solos. Our block on the pins were solid. Tose stats don't always show on the box score but its take a lot of pressure off our diggers when the block can slow down the ball off the attack."
Junior transfer
Katie McKay dug 13 Maverick attacks followed by Blasingame's 11 digs and eight from junior
Albany Schaffer as well.
