Dow Talks 2018-19 Women's Basketball Schedule

Women's Basketball
MONROE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team is only 37 days from the tip-off of the 2018-19 season. The Warhawks will play 11 non-conference games to open the schedule before beginning the 18-game Sun Belt Conference schedule in January.

"We feel like the combination of teams that we are playing in the non-conference portion of our schedule will prepare us well for the rigors of the Sun Belt largely in part because of their different styles of play," said fifth-year head coach Jeff Dow

ULM opens the season with a Texas two-step, visiting Southern Methodist in Dallas on Nov. 9 before heading west to Lubbock to square off with Big 12-foe Texas Tech on Nov. 11.

ULM then meets up with seven consecutive opponents from the state of Louisiana. The Warhawks return home for a pair of games the following week, hosting LSU-Alexandria Nov. 15 and McNeese State Nov. 18.

After a week off to enjoy Thanksgiving, the Warhawks visit New Orleans on Nov. 25. ULM continues to play weekly, heading to Northwestern State on Dec. 2 before entertaining Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 9.

The Warhawks are back at home in mid-December, to play host to Nicholls State on Dec. 14. Coach Dow and ULM will wrap up the run against in-state opponents on Dec. 17 at Southeastern Louisiana.

The Warhawks finish the pre-holiday run at Houston Baptist on Dec. 19 before hosting Arkansas Monticello in final pre-conference play warm-up on Dec. 30.

"We've seen the Sun Belt Conference get increasingly more competitive in the past few seasons with over half of the league compiling 20 wins or more in a single season," said Dow.

Sun Belt Conference play features home-and-home series with Little Rock, Arkansas State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State, and in-state foe UL-Lafayette.

The Warhawks will visit Troy (Jan. 24) and South Alabama (Jan. 26) and host Texas State (Feb. 21) and UT-Arlington (Feb.23). The final four games of the season, especially those at home will be crucial in deciding the Warhawks fate this year.

"It's going to be critical that we have success at home to position ourselves to make the post-season conference tournament," said Dow.

The Sun Belt Conference Tournament is slated to begin on Mon., March 11, at a campus site with the play-in game before the scene shifts to Lakefront Arena in New Orleans on Wed., March 13.

"The new format for the conference tournament will make it more challenging," Dow explained. "Not only to make the field but also advance in the tournament." Last season, the Warhawks traveled to New Orleans for the Sun Belt tournament, but were eliminated in the first round after an 80-54 loss to South Alabama.

Note: The 2019 Sun Belt Women's Basketball Championship will feature a 10-bracket team; however, only eight teams will advance to New Orleans. Two opening-round games will be play at campus sites, with the No. 7 seed hosting the No. 10 seed and the No. 8 seed hosting the No 9 seed.
