MONROE, La. - The ULM women's basketball team is tipping off the month of December with a road trip to Natchitoches, Louisiana where they face the Lady Demons of Northwestern State on Sunday (Dec. 2) in Prather Coliseum at 2 p.m. (CT).
The last time the two teams met, ULM shot 39 percent (17-of-44) from the field and committed 25 turnovers in a 70-48 loss in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Lady Demons parlayed those turnovers into 25 points. Headed into Sunday's game, the all-time series leans in favor of the Demons, 51-37, with the Warhawks dropping the last two match-ups.
A win at Northwestern State would give ULM its first four-game winning streak since late January 2011, when the Warhawks reeled off four straight Sun Belt Conference wins over North Texas, the Ragin' Cajuns, Arkansas State and Troy.
It's all about defense for the Warhawks. In the three-game winning streak, ULM has held LSU-Alexandria, McNeese and UNO under 35 percent shooting from the field. Over the three games combined, ULM has held its opponent to 32.6 percent shooting (62-of-190) and forcing 55 turnovers.
Five games into the season, the Warhawks have been proficient at blocking shots. ULM ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference swatting 24 shots for a 4.8 blocks per game average.
Adding to their defensive driven resume, the Warhawks rank second in three shooting defense categories: scoring defense (60.2 points per game allowed), field goal percentage defense (.361), and three-point field goal percentage defense (.250).
The Demons sit at 3-3 on the season after Tuesday's 69-54 loss at Southern Mississippi. The Demons are 3-0 in Prather Coliseum this year with wins over LeTourneau, Alcorn State and Loyola-New Orleans, but are 0-3 on the road with losses to Arkansas, Oklahoma and Southern Miss.
Two guards lead the way for the Demons, with junior Kira Bonner leading the Demons at 11.7 points per game while coming off the bench, and freshman RaVon Nero averaging 10.8 points per game. Senior forward Libba Gilliam is also in double figures at 10.0 points per game.
