Women's Basketball Hosts MVSU for Team Day

Women's Basketball
MONROE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team will continue its non-conference schedule on Sunday (Dec. 9) when they play host to Mississippi Valley State at 2 p.m. for Team Day. Tickets for fans 18 years of age and under are free, and youth and recreational teams are encouraged to attend.

The Warhawks (4-2) and the Devilettes (1-6) will meet for the first time in program history this weekend. MVSU visits Monroe after back-to-back losses on the road to Southern Mississippi and Middle Tennessee State. The Devilettes one win came in Clarksville, Tenn. where MVSU defeated Austin Peay 95-89.

ULM and MVSU have one common opponent to date. ULM lost at SMU to open the season 49-38, while the Devilettes lost to the Mustangs three days later in Dallas, 62-47.

ULM continues to end droughts in the non-conference schedule. Sunday's win at Northwestern State was the fourth straight victory for the Warhawks, the first such streak since winning the final four games in January 2011. The Warhawks also won their second consecutive road game for the first time since 2014, when the Warhawks won at UTA (Jan. 8) and Troy (Jan. 16). The Warhawks are now seeking their first five-game winning streak since they won nine straight games from Nov. 17 to Dec. 9, 2006.

It's all about defense for the Warhawks. In the four-game winning streak, ULM has held LSU-Alexandria, McNeese State, New Orleans and Northwestern State under 35 percent shooting from the field. Over the four games combined, ULM has held its opponents to 32.9 percent shooting (83-of-252) and forced 84 turnovers.

Six games into the season, the Warhawk defense stacks up well statistically with the rest of the Sun Belt Conference. ULM ranks first in scoring defense (59.3 points per game), second in field goal percentage defense (35.8), and first in three-point field goal percentage defense (24.0) and second in blocks (4.5 per game).

Senior guard Kristy Parker leads the way for MVSU with 13.7 points per game. Parker is also third on the team in assists at 1.9 per game. Parker scored a season-high 21 points in the win over Austin Peay, and has scored in double figures in six straight games.

For the Warhawks, returning guards Destini Lunsford and Arsula Clark have been lighting up the boards. Exchanging exciting performances week-to-week, both Lunsford and Clark are averaging double-digit points for ULM, 11.8 per game for Lunsford and 12.4 for Clark.
