ULM Stumbles at Georgia State, 70-57

Diamond Brooks and Arsula Clark scored 12 points each to pace the Warhawks.

ATLANTA – Janessa Murphy led three Panthers in double figures with a game-high 17 points as Georgia State defeated ULM, 70-57, Saturday (Feb. 10) at the GSU Sports Arena.
 
Trailing 4-0, ULM reeled off seven-straight points as Diamond Brooks scored on a rebound goal, Gabriella Cortez buried a 3-pointer from the right wing and Cortez finished the fast break with a layup. The Warhawks matched their biggest lead at 9-6 as Arsula Clark drove the left side of the lane for a layup with 5:38 left in the first quarter. Georgia State outscored ULM, 10-0, over the next 4:30 to turn a three-point deficit into a seven-point lead as Madison Newby completed a three-point play with 1:08 remaining in the opening period. The Warhawks went 0-for-3 from the field and committed five turnovers during that stretch. The Panthers, who scored 11 points off eight ULM turnovers, led 19-12 after 10 minutes.
 
Georgia State (6-18, 2-11 Sun Belt) opened the second quarter with a 16-4 run to build a 19-point lead at 35-16 on Newby's layup off her steal with 3:03 remaining in the first half. ULM (4-19, 1-11) closed out the second quarter with a 7-2 spurt to cut its halftime deficit to 39-25. The Panthers shot 55 percent (6-of-11) from the field and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-line in the second period. Newby scored 13 first-half points.
 
A layup by Juliet James sparked a 14-5 run as Georgia State built its largest lead a 62-38 on Murphy's 3-pointer from the left corner with 27 seconds left in the third quarter. Murphy hit all five of her field-goal attempts in the period, including three 3s, for 13 points, including GSU's last 10. The Panthers hit 10-of-13 shots (77 percent) from the floor in the third quarter, including 3-of-5 3-pointers (60 percent).
 
ULM outscored Georgia State, 11-4, over the last four minutes of the game and closed the final margin to 13 at 70-57, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Logan Oestreich and Breanna Stephens in the final 19 seconds. The bench accounted for 15 of the Warhawks' 19 points in the fourth quarter.
 
For the game, Georgia State made 47 percent (24-of-51) of its field-goal attempts and outrebounded ULM, 37-27. The Panthers outscored the Warhawks, 19-8, from the free-throw line and held a 28-17 edge in points off turnovers.
 
Newby connected on 5-of-6 shots from the field and all five attempts from the charity stripe to finish with 15 points. Georgia State also got 13 points from Kierra Henry, who converted 11-of-12 free-throw attempts.
 
Brooks scored in double figures for the first time in her career, with 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the floor, and matched her season high with seven rebounds. Clark turned in a solid all-around performance with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Warhawks also got nine points each from Cortez, Oestreich and Carissa Moody.
 
Next week, ULM returns to Fant-Ewing Coliseum to entertain UT Arlington on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. and Texas State on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 12 p.m.
