ULM Lacks Scoring Punch to Keep Pace in 81-45 Loss to Texas State

MONROE, La. – Taeler Deer scored a game-high 22 points and teammate Brooke Holle added 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Texas State to an 81-45 victory over ULM in women's basketball action at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
 
Deer led all scorers by hitting 9-of-15 from the field, draining three from beyond the arc, while Holle converted 7-of-18 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line. Teammate Ti'Aria Pitts narrowly missed a 20-point outing, scoring added 19 by virtue of an 8-of-11 shooting performance from the floor.
 
Texas State (19-8, 11-4 Sun Belt) scored over half of its points in the paint (42), finishing 31-of-63 (49 percent) from the field as a unit. The Bobcats were active on the glass, hauling in 42 rebounds, led by Holle's 10 and seven by Deer.
 
Gabriella Cortez led the way for the ULM (4-21, 1-13) unit with 13 points, knocking down 4-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. Arsula Clark added eight while Destini Lunsford contributed seven.
 
The ULM offense struggled to get into rhythm throughout the game, hitting 15-of-51 (29 percent) from the floor, but managed to hit 12-of-15 (80 percent) at the free-throw line. The Warhawks took advantage of 15 points off the bench, highlighted by LaTangellia Walker (seven points) and Carissa Moody (six).
 
Texas State scored nine of the first 16 points of the third quarter as it built a 54-34 lead at the 6:23 mark following a pair of free throws by Deer. ULM's offense was highlighted by a 3-pointer from Walker during the span, while Deer was responsible for five points in the stretch.
 
Walker helped ULM trim the deficit to 54-37 following an old-fashioned three-point play, but six points from Holle and two by Deer made for a 62-39 Bobcat lead through three quarters.
 
Tough defense by the Bobcats coupled with a 3-for-13 shooting performance by ULM in the fourth allowed Texas State to outscore its opposition, 19-6. ULM took advantage of points by Lunsford and Cortez to open frame, but the Bobcats put together a 15-0 run that included seven points from Deer as they lead 77-43 with 4:14 remaining.
 
Clark converted a layup for the final Warhawk points of the game at the 3:27 mark, while the Bobcats added four points down the stretch to post the decisive win.
 
ULM established itself early in the contest, taking a 7-6 lead on a 3-pointer off the hand of Lunsford, but the Bobcats answered with a 9-0 run, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Holle, as it moved in front by eight. Lunsford teamed with Cortez, who drained a long range 3-pointer, to pull the Warhawks within five, 17-12, at the 4:18 mark.
 
Texas State closed out the first period by scoring 12 of the final 18 points and used that momentum early in the second as it built a 15-point advantage following buckets from Pitts and Holle. Brooks briefly trimmed the lead to 33-20, but seven unanswered points by the Bobcats, which included a 3-pointer from Pitts, allowed Texas State to take a 40-21 advantage.
 
Cortez scored four points and Archer added two over the final 4:15 of the second period to make for a 45-27 lead for the Bobcats at the intermission.
 
The Warhawks now take to the road for a pair of games at South Alabama (Feb. 22) and Troy (Feb. 24).
