Four Warhawks Top Double Figures in Setback to Troy

TROY, Ala. – Kayla Robinson scored a game-high 21 points and led five players in double figures as Troy completed a regular-season sweep with a 94-62 victory over ULM in Saturday (Feb. 24) women's basketball action at Trojan Arena.

Robinson, who grabbed six rebounds and handed out five assists, capped off her double-digit performance by hitting 8-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-5 at the free-throw line. Amber Rivers came off the bench to add 16 points for the Trojans, hitting 6-of-12 from the floor and 2-of-4 from beyond the 3-point arc, highlighting a Troy lineup that edged the Warhawks, 35-32, in bench scoring.

The trio of Sky'Lynn Holmes, Jasmine Sanders and Chelsey Gibson finished with 12 points apiece, as Troy hit 38-of-75 (51 percent) from the field and 15-of-20 from the charity stripe. The Trojans (16-11, 11-5 Sun Belt) scored nearly half of their points (48) in the paint and collected 24 in transition offense. Troy scored nearly half of its points (45) off ULM's season-high 36 turnovers.

"Heading into the game, we stressed the importance of taking care of the ball, especially against Troy's pressure," ULM head basketball coach Jeff Dow. "We had decent shot selection at times, but it's impossible to overcome 36 turnovers. We simply didn't execute some fundamental things against the pressure, like attempting poor angle passes. That's extremely frustrating.

"We were pleased with the overall competitiveness in the fourth quarter, especially given the score."

ULM (4-23, 1-15) was led offensively by Gabriella Cortez's 15-point outing that included 6-of-15 shooting from the floor and a 3-of-6 performance from 3-point range. Arsula Clark joined Cortez among double-figure starters, scoring 12 points, while Diamond Brooks and Logan Oestreich posted season highs with 13 and 12 points, respectively, off the bench.

"Arsula Clark played a solid all-around game, with 12 points, eight rebounds … four offensive (boards), six assists, three blocks and two steals in 34 minutes," Dow said. "Arsula is so competitive that she makes things happen on both ends of the floor.

"I briefly spoke with Diamond Brooks as she left floor after fouling out, and I told her she played arguably her best game of the season. She hit 5-of-6 shots from the field, grabbed five rebounds and finished with 13 points. Her performance certainly bodes well for the future."

Five points in the first minute of the third quarter by Robinson helped Troy to assume an 18-point lead. The sharpshooting Robinson maintained her rhythm in the third, adding four points in just over a minute, to make for a 52-30 Trojan advantage.

Cortez drained a pair of 3-pointers and Clark added four points to the ULM lineup, but Troy managed to extended the lead to 27, 65-38, on a free throw by Holmes. Rivers scored seven points inside the final 1:30 of the frame to provide Troy with a 72-42 edge.

Four points from London Archer and two from Oestreich allowed the Warhawks to outscore Troy 6-2 over the first 2:20 of the fourth quarter. However, the Trojans quickly bounced back with six unanswered points to take a 32-point lead. ULM would move the deficit under 30 on two occasions, but Troy closed out the game by scoring six of the final nine points to complete the win.

Troy opened the second half on a 6-1 run, highlighted by four points from Sanders, as it moved in front 23-19 at the 6:54 mark. Behind six points from Gibson and four from Dajia Williams the Trojans put together a 20-0 run over the next 6:11 contest, moving in front 39-19. The Warhawks tallied the final six points of the half, including four from Cortez, as they trailed by 14 at the intermission.

A Harriet Winchester 3-pointer stretched a one-point lead for the Trojans to four at the 4:55 mark of the first quarter. Clark answered with a layup for the Warhawks, but back-to-back buckets by Holmes and Rivers resulted in a 15-9 lead for Troy. LaTangellia Walker converted a layup, Whitney Goins drove home a timely 3-pointer and Brooks sliced past the Trojans' defense to give ULM an 18-17 lead at the close of the first quarter.

The Warhawks return home to close out the regular season with a series of clashes with Little Rock (Thursday, March 1 at p.m.) and Arkansas State (Saturday, March 3 at 12 p.m.).
