MONROE, La. – ULM gave up the night's only runs on a two-run home run by Cowgirl Brenique Wright in the 3
rd inning in a 2-0 loss to McNeese State University on Wednesday (Feb.28).
Not much action was seen at the ULM Softball Complex tonight, as both teams did everything they could to keep the other at bay at the plate.
"We knew we would be facing a very talented team tonight," head softball coach
Corey Lyon said. "I take a lot more good than bad out of this game and I'm looking forward to getting back on the diamond this weekend in Memphis."
The Warhawks and Cowgirls combined for only 10 hits and 10 left-on-base over the course of the contest.
Sydney McKay was one of three Warhawks to get a hit in the loss, her season total is up to 23, ranking her 2
nd among other Sun Belt athletes.
Jayden Mount and
Rochelle Roberts were the other two players to earn a hit on the night.
"McNeese's pitcher did a good job at keeping us off balance. She [sophomore Alexandra Flores] was able to move the ball really well and kept us from getting anything going at the plate" Lyon said.
Before tonight, ULM was boasting a .341 batting average and McNeese was batting .303, a best in its league as well.
McNeese entered the match on a seven-game win-streak, averaging nearly seven runs a game, but ULM had other plans for the Cowgirls; over a 17-game span, this is only the third time McNeese has been held to two or less runs.
The Warhawks allowed only one stolen base and committed no errors in the loss.
On the mound, starting pitcher
Rachael Murphy and closer
Paige Murray put together a stat line to be proud of. Combining for only two runs, two walks, and four strike outs.
"I thought our defense was solid tonight; I am extremely proud of Rachael and Paige for how they competed in the circle tonight" Lyon added.
ULM is back on the road this weekend (Mar.2-3), headed to Memphis, Tennessee for the Blues City Classic hosted by the University of Memphis.
