MONROE, La – The ULM Warhawks struggled against an efficient Troy team today (Mar.17), falling to the Trojans in both double-header games (2-0, 14-3). ULM committed four miscues on the day and allowed 23 hits, giving Troy plenty of scoring opportunities.
The Warhawks (11-11, 1-4) seemed full of fight in game one of the day, holding the Trojans to only six hits and two runs in the loss.
Senior
Rachael Murphy went down in the books as the losing pitcher, but ULM's pitching unit had arguably its best showing of the season, compiling not a single walk over seven innings.
Warhawks
Rochelle Roberts and
Jayden Mount would be the only two with hits, as Roberts extended her team-high hitting streak to 14-straight games with a hit.
The Trojans (15-9, 3-2) are known in the Sun Belt for their superior fielding abilities, and they have already held true to that stat through two games, with a clean report in the field and two Warhawks caught stealing by Troy's Kaylee Hussey.
Game two was a tougher showing for the Warhawks, as the Trojans fired up the bats, sending three hits over the left field wall, including a grand slam by pinch-hitter Bailey Taylor that put Troy out of reach in the seventh inning.
ULM did manage three runs in game two, the first of which came in the bottom of the fourth off the bat of catcher
Brie Wrobel. Wrobel would score senior
Hunter Hogan on a single through the left side after Hogan reached on a double to center field to lead off the inning.
The Warhawks trailed only 3-1 headed into the sixth inning, but the Trojans added four more runs on five hits to take a comfortable 7-1 lead.
ULM looked to be on the verge of a comeback when
Megan Shaw fired off a sacrifice fly to left-field, scoring
Ana Hogan who started the inning off reaching on a walk.
Sydney McKay singled up the middle to score Wrobel and advance the runners. With the bases loaded, ULM's Mount would fly out to center-field, ending the inning. It would be the last time the Warhawks would score for the remainder of the day.
The Warhawks will be back in action tomorrow, on Sunday (Mar.18) at the ULM Softball Complex, as they attempt to get the win in the final game of the series.
